A Little Disappointed in Hornady

Hello all. First post here and just wanted to thank all for the great discussions and knowledge that is freely given. Such a relief from the usual internet crap.
Now to business: I recently acquired a 45-70 Govt. and was doing some load research (how I found Nathan's site). After reading Nathan's articles about this caliber and bullet performance, I started really looking at bullet selection. I had pretty well had in mind the Hdy. 350gr FP anyway because of the meplat being (what appeared to be) the right size/shape. However, because I can't leave well enough alone, I started to think about modifying the bullet's tip just to see what I could come up with. I started by thinking I'll just shave some of the lead tip off and make it a wider diameter. Wrong. By removing the lead "cap" (that's exactly what it is), the diameter of what I thought was the tip actually got smaller. What Hdy. had done, or what it looked like to me, was to take a 350gr RN and just flatten the tip and swage the excess lead down around the jacket to make it look like a larger diameter tip. Now, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but it sure seemed to me that this was just a marketing ploy and that they left the "excess" lead around the jacket just to retain advertised weight. I really don't see any benefit to expansion from leaving this cape hanging around the outside of the jacket.
Anyway, to further the "experiment", I continued trimming the bullet's tip until I reached a diameter of 0.359" (was trying for 0.360", but close enough). Now the bullet looks good, and not too much weight loss. It actually tips the scale at 334gr, so not too bad. What it loses in weight will be made up for in velocity, not much difference on either side of the equation.
I haven't loaded and fired any cartridges yet, but the whole idea behind this was to improve terminal performance in short range, close up work, in the neighbourhood of 25 - 50 yards.
Thanks for listening.

Paul on that triple barrel gun you just pull the trigger three times and it fires the barrels 123. The catch is that if you fire two shots open the action and close it again without reloading the hammers reset and it will fire the first two empty chambers before the third barrel!!! I guess you need to know your weapon of choice. How it shoots, its effective range, cartridge power and that you can shoot it well with precision and confidence under an extreme pressure situation. I'm not qualified to give advice on Bears as we only have stuffed bears here in New Zealand!

Paul -
I would definitely agree that 3 year old's are the ones that get in the most trouble - killing livestock, raiding garbage cans and generally getting into mayhem like all teenagers everywhere. Being perpetually hungry they are the boldest and show the most curiosity about new things. But I personally would still much rather face a sub adult than a sow with cubs.

Re: A Little Disappointed in Hornady
Without a doubt, Mark. I'm not sure why the number of young bear encounters, could be simple arithmetic. One sow + two/three cubs= 2/3X the encounters. And adults who have already been exposed to us in unfavourable circumstances tend to remember us quite well, so they might just move away, without us even knowing they were there.

Warwick - that would be one slick set-up for a rifle, along the same lines as the revolvers, only simpler. Would that be a 12ga. that is pictured? And just to let you know, with all this bear talk, it's not like every time you go out, you have an encounter. An actual face to face is rare, in my experience. The most common part of a bear that I see is it's ass as it's heading into thick cover. They really don't like us, and will try to avoid us, if possible. I may see a dozen bears in one hunting season, and have a chance for a clean kill in maybe two of those sightings. I don't hunt them, I prefer moose meat, but if one stands there and looks at me for too long, it's going in the freezer. Bear meat makes the best pepperoni, ever.

Re: A Little Disappointed in Hornady
I just googled that triple shotgun. Yeah, that's now the top of my list for Christmas. Three 12ga. barrels, 18.5" long. The only problem is getting it into the country, or rather, getting it out of the States. That is one nice looking rig, I'm going to have to search some forums for info on that one. Thanks for the pic, Warwick.
