7mm-08 or 7mmRM?

Hi,

I would really appreciate some advise in making a cartridge selection as well as rifle choice thereafter. After reading the first two books in the "practical guide.." series, I have settled on either the 7mm or 7mm-08 calibers. (thoroughly enjoyed the books and recommend it to people the whole time).

I would appreciate some feedback from experienced hunters. The rifle would be primarily for hunting and during the off season target shooting to keep improving. Most of my target species would be below 200kg (South African hunting). I do enjoy shooting longer ranges though this would be my first rifle of my own. I do not want to go smaller than 7mm as many game farms require at least a 7mm caliber on their farms.

I am not sure I need a 7mmRM for my intended hunting and at the additional cost I think I would be able to shoot the 7mm-08 more often, which has obvious benefits. If I do go the 7mmRm route I will buy the Remington Sendero and I think it would be rather fantastic.

I do want to be able to practice out to at least 1000m. I know I have quite a bit of practice ahead of me and that is what I find most appealing.

So I guess the question would be if the 7mm-08 would restrict me much more in terms of distance and possible game than the 7mmRM and if the additional cost of the 7mmRM would be worth it?

I would really appreciate any feedback. Thank you very much in advance.

Re: 7mm-08 or 7mmRM?
Hi All,

Since everyone has been kind enough to give advice, I thought I would post an update..

I had a look at the Musgraves at my local shop and was not overly impressed with the action. (As Nathan suggested the top of the action did not appear very smooth.)

The spacing of the for the scope mounts also are not standard so work would be needed to fit a Picatiny rail. I didn't have a vernier in hand and I could not get an exact answer regarding magazine length. So because my primary concern in buying the rifle was the action, I decided to skip on the Musgrave. I know they are in the process of building their own actions once more (based on the previous Lytleton action) so perhaps someday in the future I will support them, though not with the current setup.

Also rather annoying is the fact that at the moment there seems to be a bit of trouble bringing Remington rifles into the country, so the Sendero is also not an option. I don't mind waiting but since no one was able to give an answer as to when I may expect new stock, I might end up waiting indefinitely, also not ideal…

So I ended up buying one of two remaining Remington's left in my region (long actions). I settled for a Rem XCR in .30 06. I spoke to a local gun smith, a super friendly man with a lot of patience with a very curious young guy. He had a look at the action and is happy to do some work on it in the future.

So I will most likely bed the rifle, new trigger etc. (Nathan may expect an order for the bedding compound and stabilizer kit.) Then later have some work done and depending if I am happy with the .30 06, keep the caliber and have the action blueprinted etc or alternatively move up to the 300 win mag.

Since I would like to have a sako style extractor fitted, some work on the bolt would be done anyways so it wouldn't change things too much. So going about it in a more experimental way and have more work done by my local gunsmith instead of buying something once off.

I am quite happy with the way it is working out since this way I am more assured of what I want, and get to experiment with the .30 06 before deciding to go 300 win mag. Also met a really friendly knowledgeable gunsmith, and quite happy to be able to provide him with some work as opposed to buying a high end rifle. Depending on the stock options I go for in terms of a future build, the price would still be quite close to the Sendero.

Thanks for all the advice!

Re: 7mm-08 or 7mmRM?
I am posting in response to your post asking about a 7mm-08 or 7mm Remington Mag. I have hunted for years with a 1960's Remington BDL in 7MM Remington Mag with a 24" barrel. It will place 140 grain and 175 grain Nosler bullets in 1 1/2" groups without adjusting the elevation. The rifle is more accurate than I am. The only modification that I have is a Timney trigger set at 2 lbs. I have shot Moose, Caribou, Dall Sheep and sitka Deer with it. The rifle/bullets have alway's performed well. I have found the 175 grain Partitions tea up less meat than the 140 grain bullets. If you load the 140 grain bullets with reduced charges it should greatly reduce recoil. The Sendero is an excellent rifle, a little heavy to carry for me as I am getting a little long in the tooth. For long range hunting the 7mm Mag is hard to beat. A larger magnum caliber than the 7mm seems to kill on both ends with the same down-range results. If I remember correctly the 140 grain loses 24" in elevation at 500 yards (O" at 100 Yards). I just bought a 7mm-08 for one of my daughters. Other than that I haven't had any experience with them I hope this information is helpful.

If that was the only rifle & calibre available l think you lucked out to a fair degree Cor!

Use the info in Nathans book to help with the setup, trigger, lap the lugs, barrel and stab & bed it and away you will go.
Not sure on stock availability over there but you will be spoilt for choice should you decide to go for say a B&C, H S or similar.

A great learning/hunting/plinking calibre that l think you will come to respect very quickly.

You can always download a 7 mag, but you can only upload the 7-08 so much. I go with the 7 mag.

Hi cor
I think you'll be happy with the Rem XCR in .30 06 its a nice rifle. With a 30-06 there's plenty of 30cal projectiles to pick from, lately I've been using 180gn Hornady Interbonds & the same in SST for the long range shots.

For meat hunting I use 130 Barnes with careful shot placement where the neck meets the body
Cheers
