25-06 Tikka vs 25-06 P17 Interesting Results.

Hi Guys. Thought I would post this, in case any of you are interested in quarter bore 25-06. If you have been following my previous posts I have custom built a P17 Enfield chambered into a 25-06 Rem. It has a very heavy 25" barrel and is suppressed. It shoots really accurately and I reload for it. Weighing in at 11 lbs I decided to buy a Tikka T3 for my general hunting trips and setting the P17 up for long range varminting.

I decided to shoot both rifles through my chronograph to get some accurate data.
My velocities with the P17 seemed a bit high the last time I put it through the chrony, so for a start I shot Federal 117 gr Factory Ammo with a advertised MV of 2990 fps.

Fedaral Factory 117gr Federal Factory 117gr
Tikka: 2982, 2989, 2986 fps P17: 3184, 3163, 3193 fps

Re-loads Book Max using AR 2217 and Federal 215m Primers
No-pressure signs

117gr Pro Hunters 117gr Pro Hunters
Tikka: 3030, 3017, 3008 fps P 17: 3180, 3221, 3200 fps

Re-loads Book Max using AR 2209 and Federal 215m Primers
no-pressure signs

75gr V-max 75 Gr V-max
Tikka: 3715, 3695, 3749 fps P17: 4025, 4033, 4110 fps

These were all identical loads for both rifles.
Book velocity 3700 fps 24" Barrel, 75gr projectile.
Book velocity 3046 fps 24" Barrel, 117gr projectile.

So it looks like the suppressed T3 Tikka shoots bang on book velocities, as well as bang on Factory Velocities.
While the P17 Custom rifle shoots 200-300 fps faster than book and Factory velocities. The P17 is up there with the 257 Weatherby Magnum.

The P17 should make a great Varmint rifle, just need a better scope.
I hope all is safe, no pressure signs that I can see and not over book max.

Let me know what you guys think or suggest.

O.k I have been at my hunting block and completed some drop tests that I need help working out the velocities.

I only did drop tests for the P17 25 06 as that seemed to have a fast barrel.
I shot both loads 117 gr Pro hunters and 75 gr V-max.
They were shot at 100 yards and 337 yards (337 yards because that was a clear shooting platform at my hunting block).

117gr Prohunters shot at 100 yards and then at 337 yards.
Three shot groups of both. The drop was 105mm. 40mm group at 337 yards.

75 gr V-max the drop was 39mm. Similar group at 337 yards.

What velocities does this give me when worked from the drop test?
I don't know how to work it out.

When chronographed 3200 fps for the 117gr Prohunters and 4056 fps for the 75 gr V-max. (but thinking the chrony is not reading correctly).

hi Ben
try down loading the shooter app punch in all the info and see if the drops works out right.
you can play around with the figures until it matches up to.

This really is doing my head in. I had a play with the Strelok app, but can't sort it.

Here is my target.

The three bullet holes with the circle drawn around them are the 117 gr prohunters shot at 100 yards.
The three with the X are the 75 gr V max shot at 100 yards (Very similar point of impact).
The two triangles are the V max at 337 yards shot at a target to the left and blown to the other target because of the wind, the third triangle hit the target to the left.
The three shots on the cardboard are the 117 gr Prohunters at 337 yards, blown to the right. The 117 gr pro hunters at 337 yards are about 105 mm below the 100 yard target.

So do I work out the drop of 337-100 = 237 yards for a 117 gr bullet = 4.17" drop = 104.25mm drop with a velocity of 3300 fps.

And for the 75 gr Vmax 237 yards for a 75 gr bullet = 2.48" drop = 62mm drop at 4025 fps.
