Sierra Game Kings

After reading nearly the entire knowlage base I have been a little shocked to see that the author gave the SGKs such marginal reviews overall (with a few exceptions) I have used them to great effect for several years, all were very quick one shot kills except a rear hip shot on a feral hog (the only shot he gave me, finished him seconds later with a vitals shot) has anyone else had weak performance from the Sierra? I use them in 6.5X55, 7mm-08, 270 WSM, 7mm Rem Mag, 308, and 30-06 in all cases wounding is very wide and I have never had one fail to penetrate compleatly, even with rakeing shots on hogs. Hard to ask for better performance then that.

Re: Sierra Game Kings
Spent years hunting fallow with a .243, almost exclusively used 100gn Sierra GK's doing around 3k on average, rough guestimate 60 fallow, a hand full of reds, a handfull of Tahr, and a bunch of Wallabies (Wallabies were 58gn Vmax). Only one animal that wasn't dead on the spot, that one got away and I never recovered it (haunted me for weeks that did).

Allways looked for the same poi, just in front, or just behind the shoulder, in between the shoulders or back of neck if behind or above, low in the chest if in front, longest shot 300, never head or shoulder shot one animal with that rifle, and everything died where it stood, more or less.

Switched to a 300 WBY and had to change projectile, quit the GK, went to the PH, then to the 165 hp (Sierra), same logic re aim point, same results, this time mostly chasing Tahr.

Next up was a .280, got talked into trying ballistic tips and shoulder shooting, abysmal failure, often requiring followup shots, and some animals escaped to die badly somewhere else....Went back to Gamekings and avoiding direct shoulder impact- problem solved.

Nowadays running a 2506 with 117 Seirra Pro Hunters at 3220fps average and never a problem, longest shot to date on Tahr with it is 485m, bang flop roll down hill. It seems to me, maybe the projectile is less of a problem than point of aim in relation to the projectile used

Have experimented with TTSX and Swift Sirroco in 100gn and shouder shooting, no dramas, dead animal, but tough bullets that smash right through is the difference.

Am about to try the 117 SST, am a little apprehensive, but figure my aim point rational should see me ok, if they don't work well, back to the good old Seirra!

My 2 cents re Seirra Gamekings!

Darn that did not work. I tried to post the pics of the damage those SGKs did so Nathan would know I am not full of $#!^ but they would not take, so instead here is a link to a forum I frequent and a couple of the deer are posted on the first page there, not all of them though :(

We have harvested probably 20-30 (mostly cull deer) with that and as I said the smallest exit wound was the size of my fist. I must have gotten a differnt batch then what our admin has used.

Re: Sierra Game Kings
Hi Jared, I had a look at the link. You have not done yourself any favors as the pictures clearly show spine hits. The largest wound is from a high raking shot and is very typical. Any frangible bullet of sufficient weight will do the same with the same shot placement. The bone of the spine becomes secondary missiles. To state that the Gameking itself caused this level of wounding is mis-leading.

Further down the firearms talk forum thread, someone has pointed out the same to you and suggested that by lowering shot placement, wounding would have been less dramatic. Another poster also came along and showed wounding with the 165gr BT which is of a near identical nature in terminal performance. The wound shown through the ribs is more in line with typical behavior of both bullets. Yet even with this information supplied to you, you choose not to listen and to continue pushing biased results as an example.

I have already highlighted the explosive and often spectacular performance of the Gameing design within the Knowledge base. I have tried to take time to carefully explain how this bullet works, its strengths, its limitations. I have given specific examples of GameKing bullets which can produce immensely violent behavior- all without including biased results. The second photo you supplied s in line with performance that can be achieved with the .25-06 100gr GK, the .270 cal 130gr GK and the 150gr 7mm GK as I have stated in the Knowledge base. These bullets are at times capable of exit wounds of up to 3" in diameter on like weight game without spinal hits.

If anything, you are giving the 165 grain bullet a bad rap by stating to the more unknowing, that this bullet will destroy the entire front end of a deer regardless of shot placement.
