Freedom of association/movement?

A new bill would establish something called a “Firearms Prohibition Order”, which not only makes it illegal for a person subjected to one of the orders to possess a firearm, but makes it a crime to be around one as well. At a recent public hearing on that bill and other changes to the country’s gun laws, a legislative committee heard from a number of New Zealanders who voiced their opposition to the proposal. “The Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom said the new legislation was being rushed, was ill thought out and racist in its intent. Spokesperson Louise Hutchinson said firearms prohibition orders (FPOs) would impinge on Māori customary rights, which she said were protected under the Treaty of Waitangi 1840, the Declaration of Independence of New Zealand 1835, Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Rights. She said it allowed for Māori to gather as iwi, hapū or whānau at any given time, and brought into question what happened if someone under a prohibition order was mixing with family members with a legitimate firearm. 'Excluding a person under an FPO from engaging with his or her whānau or extended whānau is a blatant breach of Māori customary rights and indeed human rights.'” What’s fascinating about this is that the Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom is a chapter of the largest gang in the country, though its spokesperson says the local chapter has struck out on its own and is trying to be a force for good these days. Still, it’s likely that some of its members would be targeted with Firearms Prohibition Orders, and that could restrict their freedom of association (which IS a right in New Zealand, unlike the right to keep and bear arms)...

Re: Freedom of association/movement?
Central govt juts like any local govt are very good at dreaming up legislation, rules or "policy" without considering how the hell they would administer it or enforce such, or in particular, where they would find the capacity to.

Friggn idiots. No common sense if you ask me.

And by the way, race should have nothing to do with this. You cannot have rules or special treatment for one ethnicity & different ones for another, without creating resentment among one another.

We are all Kiwis man. As a Maori friend of mine (Ngati Hei chiefs son at the time) once said to me, when youo enrol to vote, tick Maori. I said why is that? He said because being Maori is to be a native of NZ, & you were born in NZ... & that makes you native & therefore Maori bro.

Chur!

Cheers,

Jon

Re: Freedom of association/movement?
Resentment IS the result of "Special" status.

Metis and First Nations have "Special" status in Canada allowing year round harvesting of all species.

I'm no less a native of this land!

A messy political topic as you pointed policies created without regard for the outcome.

A CBC Radio host, Peter Zoski, interviewed a group of first nations chiefs back in 1981. He asked how much longer will the natives continue to ask for "assistance"?
They responded with "Forever". We know how to push the political buttons to attain our goals.

Billions of dollars a year are paid, provided etc. because of "Special" status.

Canada "The land of divided people". No glue binding the nation. Western Canadian oil is not wanted in central Canada, nor pipelines.

Demonizing has become an artform as there are too many idle minds easily influenced by hype.

Enough stated. I'll refrain from climbing on my soap box.

Re: Freedom of association/movement?
It is all good though as no one is going to show up at 0300 to take me away never to be seen again.

The politicians will just increase the taxes to ensure their cup overflows with the required cash flow.

Fortunate to live where it is what you make it :^)

Re: Freedom of association/movement?
Nice topic but I won't go to far down the rabbit hole.
Its divide and conquer at the moment, its slowly chipping away at the edges till they get to where they actually want. E cat was smallest now the after B cat and C cat with latest laws.
What people fail to realize is once a bill becomes law every person who steps foot in nz or a country must obide by it or risk being imprisoned.
Just because you don't have car licence doesn't mean you don't have to follow road laws.

I remember watching doco years ago on the gulags.
This guy was saying as horrible as the gulags were for the first time he was free in the way he could say what he wanted and didn't have to worry about being taken away in the middle of the night.
Each law that passes in nz we are getting closer and closer to that.
