Hi Martin, it wasn't my intention to offend anyone. So, I am sorry. You are quite right and I will withdraw from any argument with you or anyone else. Are you Australian? Do you hunt Sambar? I do, and I was applying my knowledge of the animal and the terrain familiar to the majority of Sambar being pursued by hunters. Because a shot on Sambar infrequently results in that grand creature dropping on the spot. And in that terrain if they even run a short distance they are obscured by heavy vegetati.. Hi Nathan, I mustn't have read the entire thread closely enough and missed the intermediate long range requirement, however the Partition isn't too shabby as that front section is quite soft and does lots of damage and supposedly works down to 1800fps. The problem with the standard 338 is that it starts out slow to begin with so that 1800fps isn't that long a distance perhaps, at least with the 250gn slug. Anyway, I am curious about your work so I just ordered your entire collection. I am hoping.. Forum Index > Precision long range hunting and shooting > 338wm load development |

Hi, thanks to all who responded. I believe I have located the answer is a thread titled "Best WSM and/or 600 yd Elk Slayer" in the Long range hunting and shooting category of this forum. Nathan suggested the Winchester Extreme Weather in 300 WSM. Perfect - not too heavy, not too light and I love that action. Although, if someone could help with their personal knowledge regarding the magazine box and if it is long enough to seat those long and heavy A-max bullets in the 300 Win Mag (not WSM) and .. The question becomes a bit more difficult when we want to shoot long. This is the crux of the matter. Once we reach out, we find that smaller things make a big difference. For example, a light rifle that recoils heavily will produce fliers in the field if technique is not exact and identical with each shot, regardless of what the rifle is capable of at the bench. Such a rifle will not perform so well with a bipod either, shifting around 1 MOA from shot to shot with changes in terrain / ground ha.. Thank You Nathan! The internet can be a source for a wealth of information, such as this very site. Howsomever, there are times when I think we should have a button on our keyboards that is labeled "Bullshit Eliminator". Which is the prime reason why I don't last long on many of the websites they have out there pertaining to hunting. It never fails, somebody posts about for example the killing power of a 380 pistol on Cape Buffalo. The question in itself has to come from a mad man. But not to wo.. Talk about a thread double up. OK, the spine shot has several problems that you all need to be aware of. 1. When shooting offhand, we tend to shoot high, even in close with the rifle zeroed for close work. It is important to learn to aim low as a habit in order to avoid high misses. When snap shooting offhand, aim very low. 2. When shooting at extended ranges, newbies have a tendency to want to aim high as they cannot get past the idea of the shot being long and the bullet dropping. If environme.. Thanks Nathan, Martin and all the other contributors to this thread, it is an absolute gold mine of information. I have two T3 supervarmints 243Win and 223Rem, it appears I have overtightened the king screws on the 243 and damaged the synthetic stock so I bought two Boyds laminate thumbhole stocks to put on the two rifles. While trolling around the net for bedding information several people on different sites were speaking well of Nathan and his products so I looked up his site and ordered two b.. 57 months ago by Nathan Foster | Re: Best .308w Bullet for short range
Hi Rui, my apologies for neglecting this thread. You say that Hornady is the easiest to get hold of. A certain degree of speed would help trauma but some weight is also needed for poor shots. So I think something around 165gr would be ideal unless the boar are over 90kg- then it can pay to step up to a 180gr bullet for blood trailing or use a tougher bullet. Here are some basic options: 165gr SST 170gr Flat nose .30-30 for under 100m Heavier basic options: 180gr SST 180gr round nose. 180gr Norma.. Well, in another thread, Rui wants to shoot the GS custom bullet. Normally you need to step down a burn rate from what you might traditonally use (powder) but he could try a magnum primer. I suggested he use 125gr bullet data as an easy option based on his local load data. Its all very straight fowards- just basic experimentation. More relevant to ES and harmonic nodes (accuracy) than velocity generation. Forum Index > Rifles general discussion > Standard V`s magnum primers |

Nathan, if there is a man on this planet that can put saneness to this it would be you Brother. This is my best Russian to date, a 500 pound specimen. I caught up with this tusker in a very thick Cedar swamp bedded down. After a careful stalk I got to within 25 meters of it and snapped a twig, at which point it got up. 58 months ago by Nathan Foster | Re: Hornady Match Bullet
Unfortunateky Jake, it will be the same as using 7.62 FMJ ball ammo. The slower you go, the wider you need to go. Think Black powder. Try to break bone when using your rifle. Line up on the leg, then move forwards 1" to the front line of the front leg. Head shots will be useful too, but watch out for jaw shots with the steep trajectory. You don't have the energy to stun with a missed brain shot. Don't opt for spine shots until you have a good understanding of the spine. There is a great deal of .. "Its not what you're shooting, its whether or not you know how to use it " Bullshit. Before I got into this, I guided a client into 25 yards on a large boar so he could neck shoot it from a rest- ensuring a clean kill. The bullet hit dead center of the neck. The result, nothing, the boar peeled away, the ammo was hopeless. I have had the same occur with the Swede on boar with shoulder shots which started me on this entire journey. The A-MAX works fine in my 7mm-08. As I said in the first post, l'm looking into the theory of twist rates. Another example would be the 338 Federal. In Nathan's second book, he says this would be a great long range calibre with the Rocky Mountain 225gr. 2800-3600 fps, ideal twist rate is 1:11. These velocities are ok for 338 lapua or Edge, but at 2400fps of the Federal then a faster twist rate would be better. As I said, just trying to understand the theory. Hi Thomas, Marty who sized from 9.3 down to .375 is staying with us at the moment, enjoying some long range shooting. This is a very good idea because you can swage the 162gr SST or A-Max from .284 down to .277. Key points: Marty found a whack a mole set up better than using a home press. So no need for a threaded die- though marty is using a .222 sizing die reamed to suit. The ideal die needs to start out at say .285. the entire projectile sits in (base of the bullet below, not flush with the t.. Forum Index > Rifles general discussion > sizing bullets |

Lovely thread, and I could step in Ted's shoes all day long with the same concerns. Nathan, to your point, the Cartridges book has become like a nudie magazine for me, sneaking out for peeks and reads all through the week. There are clear distinctions and the text is VERY well thought out - but for us newcomers, the cartridge/rifle selection process can be overwhelming. Mainly zeroing in on the fine line between the .270 running hot 150's vs the 7mmRM with the 160-168's, and then comparing the S.. Forum Index > Rifles general discussion > Same old dilemma |

Hi Ted, quite often guys will have a two gun set up consisting of a simple rifle like the .270/ .308 / .30-06 etc- versus a more dedicated long range rig which is somewhat heavier as Bob mentioned. A case of horses for courses. When I am asked to set up a guy with one rifle for everything, close and long range but without too much weight, we often end up at the 7mm Rem Mag. One of the main reasons for this, is to keep the rifle weight down a bit for hard climbs. Its a fine line between rifle wei.. Forum Index > Rifles general discussion > Same old dilemma |

Nathan, am I correct in assuming you would advocate cutting a stock down to size for a child over having the child learn to shoot in a position they'll grow out of? Noah is 5 and very eager. He's shooting a few BBs at this point but it will be a bit before he graduates to a rimfire, I think. I've been wondering if one of the really small frame .22s would be a good investment.
