G'day all
Just wondering if anyone has used the Burris Eliminator 3,
Range finding scope ? The concept seems good for shots out to 600m or so?
Regards
Bob

My mate has one on a 300 RM. It was not as clear as my SIII 6-24x50 Sightron. The recital covered a lot of the target. Turkey at 600 yards needs more zoom. I wasn't overly impressed by it. I tried it before I had the Sightron and Leica 10x50 RF Binoculars. I guess it comes to how much money you have to spend. I can Range find for any cal rifle with the Leica's and use drop charts. I guess it is up to the individual to decide if you want to spend time setting up your own gear to get a reliable repeatable system ?

Thanks Warwick
My mates looking at one. I use a Sightron S111 and Range finding bino's. Apparently the latest Eliminator is better than the previous models.
If you watch they're add you'd have one on every rifle ha ha
Cheers

As an aside to this post it's not a silly idea to take a tape measure and measure the hight of fences bushes and learn what the average hight of different animals that you are looking for? Then you can get a better idea of what you are looking at for bullet drop. Before I found this site that is how I guessed it! Now that I have read what I just wrote it seems quite silly but it was better than nothing. the standard measure we used was. Look about 4 "Land Rovers" below the pine tree on the left the Hares sitting there! And the volley of shots would begin. Lol

I'll take the 5th amendment as I post this!

A  gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature.

Re: Burris Eliminator 3 3-12x44mm Extreme Range Laser Ballistic Riflescope
I have been debating this for a while. I have a mate using one on a 300RUM and it works fine. I put the first model 4-12x44 on my RUM and it will not hold zero. More than likely the scope. Held zero until the next time it was used and then off zero by as much as 6 inches high and 2 left.

The rifle is a 300 RUM SPS with a brake. It is meant to be a lightweight rig to be used in the field. The extra weigh of the Eliminator is countered by the light weight of the rifle.

BUT

Does this make sense to use an Eliminator, and not understand the ballistics or a standard scope and learn the details. Obviously to learn a craft you have to understand it but once you have the trajectory set it is the same for either scope. Using an Eliminator takes out the need for a range finder.

Is it more ethical to use an Eliminator or risk making a mistake with adjustments/holdover and range?

The collective thought would be most welcome as it is a dilemma that I am sure lots of hunters are considering.

All of Nathan's books answer this question.
For example. If you want to fly a plane solo. You have to invest time money and effort to gain the skills and knowledge to get the results!
The same goes for Long Range Marksmanship. Get some good reliable equipment. Do your load Development. Reload the same load for best performance and accuracy. Learning good shooting techniques. Shooting best loads over set distances and accurately recording information. Make up Drop charts. Set up targets at different distances and sizes. Use range finder and drop charts to dial in scope. Hold aim breathe squeeze bang ------- Ting! Repeat this at all and any achievable range for the chosen calibre. Practice practice practice.
Or you buy an Eliminator read the full set of instructions 3x over until you have got how it's going to work clearly in your mind. Follow these steps from scope manufacturer to the word and see how good it is?
Either way your going to have to invest time and money to get the results.
Remember that saying about fish?
"Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to catch fish and he'll eat for life? "
How much skills and knowledge are you happy to loose and end up paying for a computer to provide? I remember my grandfather teaching me how to do things Like how to tie my laces? Do you want a computer to tie them? I'm not sure if I want to be the final Mohican .

Re: Burris Eliminator 3 3-12x44mm Extreme Range Laser Ballistic Riflescope
Yep I was kind of expecting that answer... only just found the site so have not bought the books yet, still reading all of the info and going through the discussion forum.

There is so much info at our finger tips now you need to ensure you are listening reading and taking in only the good stuff instead of wasting time and effort.

The point of the computer doing the hard work is maybe changing context. Do you use a computer to work out the drop chart... ballistics software on your phone? We have moved past using pen and paper in most things. Is it easier to use online banking rather than stand in a queue..? Is it easier to use a computer scope, whether you understand the working or not, hell yes.... is it the right thing to do is the question. Does it make you a better marksman?

Warwick would it be better to learn how to range visually or is a range finder better? fish or learn to fish?

Re: Burris Eliminator 3 3-12x44mm Extreme Range Laser Ballistic Riflescope
Hi all I'm new to shooting (3 months) and I own Burris Eliminator 3 4-16x50mm and I love that scope, 4 trips to shooting range to zero it in and 2 week ago at friends farm I was able to hit steal plate 400mm/400mm at 500m (3 out of 5) from my rem700 in 308.
Target at 300m and 400m no problem at all. I did ran it to troubles wit my scope currently waiting for replacement (3 scope) rubber power adjustment ring become undone in two previous scopes (to hard glue in my opinion and not enough). Sorry for may broken english, as you can tell I'm not native english speaker. Link to picture 1.https://www.dropbox.com/s/bhyutxfj58giwds/2015-07-20%2016.03.41.jpg?dl=0

Re: Burris Eliminator 3 3-12x44mm Extreme Range Laser Ballistic Riflescope
Practice practice practice. My Dad was amazing at judging distance. He spent years as a contract fencer on farms and would look at a goat across the valley and say that's 350 yards he'd flip up the 400 yard V sight on his Parker hale 303 take aim and shoot. He used to say take half a bead in the sights. He didn't miss but he did pass up a shot if he thought he might miss. He would wait until a better shot was on. When I started shooting 7 years old he would give me one bullet for single shot 22 and say "See if you can get a rabbit". I learned.
My step dad has a picture taken in Italy by his Dad . Written on the back of it " Kiwis Grenade fishing " the next picture is fish cooking over a fire we learn life skills hands on old school. New tricks . WWII Kiwi soldiers carried a stolen dead pig into camp covered with a blanket on a stretcher. A Major General drove past and saluted the dead soldier being carried in by his mates.

Re: Burris Eliminator 3 3-12x44mm Extreme Range Laser Ballistic Riflescope
These scopes are expensive too arnt they? Close to nightforce dollars?
My mate wanted one who maybe like others... to put it blunt he's a bit of a cabbage. Went to school to eat his lunch, he knows this.
But it's by no means hard to work out the basic moa and yards. Iv said this.
When we gong or zero I do his corrections for him. Iv said I will do everything right down to drop charts. He's scared of having to do a little thinking. I think there are others like this too. And he's not that dumb he sure can work out running costs of his business.
But if that's what he wants and keeps him in the game, oh well.

Re: Burris Eliminator 3 3-12x44mm Extreme Range Laser Ballistic Riflescope
i guess there's pro's and con's to a lot of things.
i believe in learning things the hard way first as the skills will stay with you for life as warwick has mentioned, then you can move on from there.

the biggest worry i would have is reliability, i know you could argue the same about any scope or range finder but you normally keep your range finder in a pocket or pouch not on your walking stick/scrub pusher. me and electronics don't tend to get along to well anyway.
just imagine you get a ballot for fiordland in the bugle drive the length of the country pay a helicopter to fly you in for a week and first day water gets into your electronic scope and its buggered now what do you do? predict the worse hope for the best, tend to be how i look at my hunting gear.
