Need help deciding on scope options

I will be mounting the scope on a .300 wm. I am not yet a long range hunter...200yds is about my max. I am putting this rifle together in order to grow into its capabilities.

The scope- I have narrowed it down to Nightforce NXS..either the 2.5x10x42 or the 3.5-15x50. I will be doing a fair bit of hunting in the 200-300 range in the beginning, but will do plenty of practice at longer ranges...long range hunting opportunities are plenty as I grow in confidence and this is the goal.

So this scope needs to meet current needs, but allow me to stretch out.

Questions- Will the 2.5-10x42 be too limiting as I start shooting regularly out past 700-800 yds? and is the Zero Stop worth the extra dollars or should i purchase an older model without the Zero Stop for less $.

Thanks for your help! I have learned so much from this forum and Nathan's books!

Hi Josh, you may find that 10 power is a bit less than optimal once you reach right out. Yes it can be done but its not quite the same as using a power with double the magnification.

Its a bit of a catch 22 because the NXS 5.5-22 is quite a heavy scope, ideal for light and mid weight rifles but heavy if fitted to a varmint weight rig- if the rig is to be used on all day walks etc. This is why I often recommend the Sightron 6-24, the weight is better and the optic can be used in close or out long like the NXS (same glass). This is perhaps my main bias towards Sightron. Apart from this, I really do like the NXS scopes- they are just wonderful.

15 power is adequate for 1000 yard shooting- that could work for you. I do still prefer to get over 20 power if regularly shooting out long but 15 power would suffice.

I have no need of a zero stop myself. I have the elevation hash mark noted in my drop charts and I guess because I shoot regularly, I don't get mixed up. Others really get stuck without it and some will make home made zero stops for whatever scope they have (washers). I got caught out early with clients using my rifles, then forgetting to dial down after shooting. This forced me to be aware of where the zero hash mark was located and to write this down- and to make sure clients are drilled in returning to zero.

Re: Need help deciding on scope options
Hi Josh,
I have a 300WM Remington SS SPS in a Bell & Carlson stock with Nightforce 3.5-15x50 Zerostop scope.
The weight tames the SPS very well without being too heavy for stalking.
As far as Zerostop, I find it very handy but the combination would work just as well without it. Using 208gr Amax zeroed at 100yd, 1000yd elevation is about 26moa so only 1 revolution of the dial so Zerostop is not really required for counting revolutions and missing zero.
Hope this helps.

Re: Need help deciding on scope options
PS. Nathan has explained elsewhere but just to put my spin on Turrets: keep with MOA, not MILRAD.
At 1000yd each click of a 1/4 MOA changes impact by 2.6 inches or about 66mm.
A 0.1 MRAD will change impact by about 3.6 inches or 91mm. (if my maths is correct).
If nightforce came out with a 0.05 MRAD Turett then that would be better.
All this crap you here elsewhere about keeping turrets and reticle the same is just that, crap. A Mildot reticle is a 1 in 1000 reticle, ie 1 inch, yard, metre etc in 1000 inch, yard, metre etc.
I find the Nightforce Mildot reticle much less cluttered than the MOAR.
Just my opinion.

Re: Need help deciding on scope options
Thanks guys, I will probably go with the 5.5x22 without the Zero Stop. I'll have to explore the reticles a little more...was going to go with MOAR, but it is cluttered. This being my first long range set up and not much experience past 300, it is a lot to take in.
