been looking at getting a sightron for my tikka currently have a leupold vx1 3-9 on it but after something with bit more zoom specially when practicing.
originally was looking at the 4-16x42 mil dot since the light and compact but after reading nathans book thinking that the 6-24x50 mil dot might be a better option. just after opinions as I'm pretty new to any accurate shooting.
its my walk around rifle I'm a pig hunting so i just take my rifle with me when hunting in deer country hoping that one silly enough to walk out in front of me in range but slowly getting more and more in to rifle shooting

Hi Thomas, a 4-16 would serve you well but yes, there is some merit in a 6-24x50 simply because you have a very light rifle and this particular model scope sits well atop the Tikka T3 without upsetting its balance and to the contrary- can really help settle the T3.

My advice is- no client that I know of has ever been dissapointed with the SIII 6-24x50 LRMD. It is a good investment and can be put on a magnum later on if you later wish to downsize the scope on your .270. Its a long view, a scope that you can always find a use for.

Having said this, the 6-24 really comes into its own at longer ranges. The 4-16 is ample power for your .270 which does not have a huge effective range based on the terminal performance of current bullet designs that you have access to in your location (see second book for effective ranges versus current bullet designs). My point is that you don't "need" 24 power. Nevertheless, I am sure you will enjoy having this extra power range if you choose the larger optic.

If you are leaning twoards the larger optic then go for it. As for bush work- 10 yards is about the minimum for the 6-24x50LRMD set on 6 power. It really is quite effective in close.

None too bulky. A Tikka 7mm-08 with True-Flite barrel, Wild dog stock and SIII 6-24x50 with sunshade removed.

Its been a while since I worked on a P14- but very nice rifles. No traps really, just a basic Mauser type action. I have always been fond of the bolt handle, the way its shaped (for some odd reason).
