Scope advice for a .222 project

Hi Guys
I've bought a Remington BDL Custom Deluxe 1990 second hand in .222 cal as a project, it's about to get pillars and bedding although I plan to re-stock it with a nice piece of walnut long term. The rifle will be used for small game up to wallabies and plinking out as far as I can, learning about wind reading as much as possible. In terms of scope choice I would like something in the 6-24 range ideally with a 40-44 front objective but 50 isn't a deal breaker. First or second focal plane, either is fine. I prefer a Duplex type crosshair, not a big fan of fussy reticles and want tactical type turrets even if they are capped (it's likely to be a fair weather rifle). Finally I'd rather stay under the 1k mark in kiwi dollars, not sure how feasible this is.
I've come across the Sightron S2 Big Sky 6-24X42 Duplex, which seems to be discontinued but is still listed on some websites, also the Sightron S-TAC 4-20x50 Duplex. I know Sightron scopes seem to get largely good reviews here, I'm not brand loyal at all so am happy do get any recommendations or advice anyone has on this
Cheers
Vince

Hi Vince, either the STC 3-16 or 4-20 duplex will work well. I think you will be chuffed with the quality vs the price point. You may find that the 3-16 balances nicely (also aesthetically) on the rifle but that's up to you, its a personal thing.

Thanks Nathan

Completely agree about the aesthetics, from this perspective I would much prefer a smaller scope, I'm juggling that against target size, a rabbit at 300-350 is a helluva lot smaller than a deer at 600-700!

Re: Scope advice for a .222 project
I have a custom built Remington 40X single shot action, with a benchrest quality 26" medium heavy barrel. I tried several scopes, one of which was a Leupold 6.5-20x40 AO. This is a great scope, but I eventually moved it to a 6BR. The 40X now wears a Leupold 12X fixed power with additional dots, one above and four below the main X. I have a small drop chart taped to the side of the stock with dot vs. range info. The scope also has target turrets with caps, so I can make small field corrections as needed. The rifle has served me very well for 15 years, taking many ground hogs, prairie dogs, ground squirrels, fox and coyote. Bottom line, you may want to consider a fixed power nicely balanced to your rifle. -Ed
