Turrets topic of the day

Gidday lady's and gentlemen
So I'm on the hunt for anew long range scope to sit a top of my new 300 win mag and to this date I've been a big fan of covered turrets as I bush bash a fair bit down here in the magical Marlborough sounds. So as I research all the different brands makes and models it seems that long range set up scopes generally have un capped turrets so I'm after people's opinions on this, is it a problem if I have un covered turrets when floundering thru the scrub like a lost elephant or is it not a issue I should bother working around? I'm trying to get a scope inside my current 2016 budget with zero stop but ill cross that bridge when I come to it.
Also is there any features people recommend in a scope? I want something I can eventually knock on 1000yards back door. So I guess 20 + power should cut the mustard?

Hi Sebastian, I know you have my shooting book so please go back through and read the optics section again.

If you want covered turrets, order a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 LRMD. You can leave em on or take em off or leave one on (windage) and one off (elevation). In other words, you can have your cake and eat it. And this will hopefully fit within your budget.

As for zero stop, this is not a necessity, not with experience. This subject and work arounds are also covered in the book.

Don't make this too hard for yourself. I see some people go around in circles for months and then end up back where they started.

Gidday Nathan cheers I'll go back thru and have a read. I'm heavily leaning towards sightron but wanted to have a wee look around before making decisions. I'm half pie intrested in vortex just because they are cheaper and seem to be decent but unfortunately I know all to well you get what ya pay for. I am a big night force fan but it may be a stretch money wise this year so like you say I'll keep coming back to were I started! So next question! I currently have a night force on my 6.4 swede and its in moa am I better to run all my scopes in the same format or are the too systems once practiced easy to go to and from?

Definitely recommended the sightron LRMD I put one on my mates 300. I've got the Moa model on mine I've got the wind age turret taped up to stop it moving as it doesn't have covers. And again your welcome to come have a look

This is a tricky one Sebastian capped or not!!
If dialling in in the field is the primary need ie ranges often over 300 odd then target or tactical turrets will make adjustments easier when your behind the rifle tracking a moving animal.
In a dual role rifle that bush bashes a bit l would stay with caps and live with having to remove them for dialling longer shots as you should have time.

On my 2 dedicated LR rigs I have a SIII MD with covers & a Jap Weaver with exposed on my Rem's. l have knocked the windage out on the 308 when spotlighting and it's now taped as well.

Stay with MOA, make & verify your drop charts in moa, job done. Wind in inches which you can allow for with the reticule.
Nathans recommendation of the SIII MD recticle is a good one as its easier to see in the tight stuff than some of the other finer models.

Hi all
I just went through the same thing Sebastian, looking for a compact scope for my 308.
I just ordered a Nightforce SHV 3-10x42 compact with MOA reticule has covered turrets $1015. I've been using a MOA reticule out to 550 with no problems, with a NXS 2.5-10 24 , love that little thing, surprisingly good in low light too.

I played with the MOA hold over reading, in my Bushnell 1600 range finding Bino's, they are spot on with my 30-06 168 A-Max load out to 600 & I just use the reticule.
