6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!

Put this in the Precision LR section because that's my intended use, junior shooter, paper & fox puncher mainly.
Not looking into performance, recoil etc. as l have my head around that side of it.

What l want to know is how have people found the Creedmoor to use, as in reload, feed from the mag, stuff like that. Field experience as a cartridge design, brass issues, brands, hard on necks, thin jackets, barrel life.

Read plenty of reviews etc. just wanted some real world Ideas without any hype, bias or "sponsored reviews"!!

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
One interesting job Marty:

I tricked up a Ruger factory rifle for a client, its won a few comps, goes really well, no known issues and the barrel has lasted. Ruger have lifted their game with their barrels so much in recent years.

In truth though, I have never seen the need for the new 6.5 cartridges. My old 1923 Swede can shoot bench accuracy (just about buggered now though). So if it could be done then, how can we really improve on it? I get miffed with the marketing of some new cartridges which although are designed with great strengths, are if we are to be fully realistic offered where there was no need.

Still, many folk find favor with the Creedmore.

Yes that's why l posted, hype can be very, very seductive & totally BS as we know!
You know me, never been into the latest greatest shiny peace of crap, if it's not practical it's out the door.

Nice to know that's there is no major flaws in the design and have had plenty of reports of the accuracy.

I only ask as this it is now available as a factory offering in some pretty handy, affordable platforms but more so I looked at one in a very capable LR set up, all the gear at a good $.

Many guys love their 223's & l don't want to start a calibre bashing session but l just haven't warmed to it out long. Just looking for options and one of these popped up which ticked all the right boxes for the intended use.

I'm not going to argue with Nathan. But I don't have a Swede. I had a Browning 22- 250 that needed a rebarrell and I picked the creedmore. Hornady brass is all I've used with no issues. Barrell has around 1200 rounds through it and still going strong. I just built a sporter in 6.5 lapua.

I agree with what Nathan says, but that being said, it is still a very popular fad just now, and one of our local dealers took his daughter out for a moose hunt using the 6.5 Creedmore. She got her moose that evening and dropped it on the spot. The gal can shoot tiny bugholes with it too.

Since then they have sold a pile of them from their shop both as custom rifles as well as factory ones, to fellows who figure they might want to learn shoot out long with lighter weight rifles yet have the kids able to shoot it as well.

My personal choice for my boys as they grew up was a 7x57 to start them with, then a .30/06 later, and this worked out fabulously.

Good stuff John, exactly what l was after, cheers.

Just wanted to see past the fad to the nuts n bolts of it. I don't need another med/big game rifle, the exact opposite in fact.

Hi Martin. My gunsmith mate has made me various caliber's on the 6.5. X 47 lapua case. Necked out to 30 cal it betters 308w with up to 150gn pills & extremely accurate as is the 6.5 version. I started out using a 6mm BR necked out to 30BR, it pushed 150gner's 2800fps also very accurate. The 284w necked out to 30 shouldered to match the lapua case is a good thing too.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
Sounds fair Bob,

Originally l wanted to build myself a custom 6.5 06 AI with a 35 shoulder on a Rem action & run down loads for junior but reality bites and builds are just not possible $ wise, life's a B hey! My hats off to the guys on here doing all the builds, if only............

This rifle is for the same purpose just scaled down & on a very small budget with mid range Varminting the main focus & LR training a close second.
Just an idea due to a great rifle l came across that fit my requirements almost perfectly chambered in a Creed. The Amax pay load will do all l need without needing to be pushed to hard.
Noise is also a factor around bloody fussy Merinos with lambs at foot, they'll ditch the little one in a heart beat, so thumbs up their again.

Martin I'm selling my CZ 223 as my Sako 75 6.5×55 Swede with 85grain pills should have more speed and punch than the 223.
My 140gr reloads I developed using Nathan's books are deadly. Carefully check out the Creedmoor mate. I don't have any experience with it . You wouldn't regret owning a Swede?

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
Really miss my 243 Warwick, great cal for this particular dual role job although a little hard on barrels. I like being slightly over gunned when controlling ferals for farmers as you never know what'll pop out. Often shots can push out a way and the 223 just gets a little lazy with lighter pills.
This is where the 6.5's come in, along with nice slippery pills. A Swede would work without fuss l'm sure. This particular Creed was basically a new build with good quality components from a very genuine fella that builds a lot of high end rigs.

Just doing some home work hey!

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
Hi Martin,
I have recently tuned (bedding and trigger job) a creedmoor for one of the shooters at eagle park, little river, its a VT ruger and I was a bit disheartened by it when pulling it apart as the factory fit wasn't the greatest, but after a day or so bedding and doing the trigger and general fitting up better (scope, bottom metal ect) I wish I owned it, the owner was getting half moa with factory loads before the work but is trying 123gr amax hand loads using adi 2208 at the moment I will get onto him and find out how he has progressed this weekend.

I've got to say I was a bit worried when he told me the cal 6.5 creedmoor as I think a lot of the 6.5's and have a 6.5x55 and 6.5x284 but thought the cartridge wouldn't be up to it but I think I was wrong and it definitely is, he wants it for tipping over foxes at distances to 350m and I'm sure it will be OK

regards Mark

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
Sorted out the bedding on a VT 204 for a friend Mark, overly complicated bit of kit that didn't impress me at all until we did some load development!!! .2-.3 Moa with hand loads or hornady factory.

Happy to try a creed or swede if the right rifle Combo pops up

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
I can completely understand this, it's an opportunity knocks situation.

Sure, you can find a Tikka Masala on the wall or a Howa in 6.5x55 but then something (Creedmore) comes up with a heavy barrel or set up just right for the type of work you are wanting to do. Certainly worth investigating these things.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
my mate got to the range with his tweaked ruger and his test 123gr amax loads, his best efforts shot three shot groups that could be covered with a five cent piece at 100m, all were triangular and nice groups, lets say he is happy,
he is going to adjust seating depths to see if he can tighten up his best grouping but he is happy with he has, I asked him why the creedmoor instead of a 6.5x55 and he just said why not

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor....spill ya beans!
He would have to be happy with that Mark.

It's impressive the accuracy that can often be achieved from relatively cheap factory rifles. Our new 223 Howa will only get down to .7 at best with a cold barrel and l'm shitty as. Doesn't seem that long ago l would have been wrapped with a factory CF that was inside moa haahahaaa.
I'm blaming Nathan for guiding me how to get all my other rifles really humming.......

This Creed Im looking at has is a semi-custom with an after market barrel so that'll be a first for me & hopefully it shoots similar to your mates after performing the normal TBR tweaks. It's also on a Winchester action so again another first.

If l end up buying it l will do a post on the bedding etc. similar to my others, helps to get people thinking l hope.
