Has anyone used the 162grn Amax on tahr? and with what results? I've got them going good in the practical but have fears of the being a bit soft for such a tough animal. in the past I've used 160 accubond out to 500yrd with a rem mag with good results. I've been mucking round with VLDs just wondering if its worth it especially with the 175 ELD coming out.

I've been shooting the 162 Amax for several years in a 7 mag. I looked up the average weight for a male tahr, which was 160 lbs. You'll have no problem with an animal of the size. I shot a 325 lb caribou at 550 yds with the Amax and had not problems. My buddy shot a caribou at 530 yds with 140 gr Amax with the 6.5-284. If you can do your part, the Amax will do its part. Nathan has been drilling game with the Practical for some time. Good luck.

Hi Chris, in close it can very occasionally be a problem depending on the individual bullet batch. The bullet can dump most of its energy at the surface but you'll find on carcass inspection that wounding extends to vitals. Speed of killing can be up to 45 seconds or more (same goes for Red deer and Elk) which is not ideal. Just keep in mind what I have said about this being batch and range/velocity related. The worst case scenario is hitting the tough hide of a mature bull, then striking a ball joint- but the animal will still (albeit eventually) break down. Nevertheless, it pays to get a follow up shot away as best you can to speed the process for the sake of the animal and recovery.

Once velocity is shed, this risk is eliminated. The bullet may not exit but it will thoroughly destroy vitals. The figure of 2600fps is your friend in this regard.

The 175gr ELD-X will be about ideal for what you are wanting for future use.
