Shooting bench or foxhole?

Ok call me crazy but I find shooting tables feel unatural to use! I'd rather shoot liying down or standing with a decient rest at the correct height to shoot from like a trench or foxhole. Or a rest type shelf mounted to a tree trunk? I have got a 7rest I saw at RLS and thought its worth a try and if not its going to be good as a work bench gun rest . So has anyone gone away from the conventional table with a seat for range work. Maybe a concreate tank with an small window with a custom adjustable padded gun rest? The big plus being that a Braked Magnums Barrel would be outside the firing hole with concreate walls to Shut The F***** Thing Up!
I Have always used trees, fence posts, Logs, Mound of dirt, Whatever! as a rest to shoot off. If somethings there handy and practical to use I'll use it because I know I wont miss! Thats what I tell myself and 99% of the time Unless Opossum decides to pee on you! (We both missed with our first shots!!! LOL I saw it coming pinged and side stepped!!!! Furry F@#$er reload Phutt wopp! Fa...............ll . Geeze I used to love shooting money out of the trees in the late 1980s one dead unskined Urewera buck possum would fetch around $14 multiply that by 45 and it was bloody good money and fun ! Bloody 1080 has destroyed a good honest industry)
So back to the initial question. What have any of you used or tried? I find on a bench/table using bags that I cant get forehand grip how I like it to be? My Ham sandwich as Nathan called it! So have a good critical think about the options Ive asked about? My pick of the bunch is a 10ft Strainer post 4 foot into the ground and rammed in firmly or concreated into Mother earth with some thick wooden peggs with some pool snake foam over the peggs for padding? Im House sitting a farmhouse for a month and will be finishing my load development then stablising and bedding my 75 Sako 6.5x55 Swed. Ill be interested to hear your thoughts? Cheers Gents

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Having no one location favourites to shoot game from, I like to use a daypack for my forestock rest and a jacket balled up for the butt stock.

If I plan to shoot from a blind I use a bipod trigger stick and shoot from a sitting position, but on occasion on a warm evening, I use my Harris bipod with a swivel for adjustment and a lock on it to steady it. Just got to learn the hang of it to shoot from them. If using the bipod at a site, I often use a light 5" x5" bag filled with plastic beads for butt stock support if close to my atv.

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
In the field I love to get my feet into a Wombat burrow using his mount of excavations as my high point to shoot up onto the hillside. With my day pack as a rest with the rolled up coat as needed as chest or stock support as Nathan taught me just like Bryan is also doing. So sort of a foxhole l guess.

When prone shooting l will always look for a depression to get my lower half into as it feels more natural and takes some arch out of the lower back so again like a shallow “fire pit” as we call them in OZ.
When stalking or hunting l always look for a “steady” in every situation, job number one!
So drop to one knee, ass on the ground and use both knees (favourite for down into gully shots) or lean against a tree/log or hold a sapling, whatever suits with offhand shots my last resort and only at fairly close ranges. I find shot placement is partly compromised with offhand shooting, I will generally drop the animal but not always in the way l wanted and prefer open sites in that situation.

I too am going to go back and try the Harris bipod again, again l will employ Nathans techniques because l was amazed at the groups l printed with his 338 Edge, prone off of the bipod as l never could get the damn bipods to work without flyers before.

Back to your shooting position though l have fired from a standing pit and found it to be very comfortable bracing against the sidewalls but no accuracy work was done.

With the Swede Warwick wouldn’t you Stab & Bed it first to set up the harmonics for the following development or are you doing a before and after type thing?

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Hi guys
Because of the long grass where I hunt, I use shooting sticks. Two pieces of 1/2" aluminium tube 900mm long with a bolt through them 125mm from one end. You have plenty of height adjustment with the sticks then I put the rifle butt on my knee. often shoot 300m. The ally I use is aircraft grade strong as.

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
How does your POI go shooting over the sticks Bob, do you see any shift?

I have never tried these before, is it like switching to a bipod?

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Hi Martin
I've never shot a target with the sticks. I sight my rifle in at the range the normal way. Nearly all my hunting shots are over the sticks. I shot 3 goats at 560m last week over the sticks using the mil dots, the first shot was spot on other two were a bit back but they were moving about a bit.
I'm using 168gn zombie -max in my 30-06 @2890fps, still getting complete pass through even at that range and they were big very woolly goats.

I've been using my sticks for many years, sooner leave a boot behind than the sticks.
Cheers

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Thanks for your replies . Martin your right I should stabilize and bed first. The only trouble is that I'm house sitting a mates farm house for a month while he's visiting family in China. I'm aloud to hunt the deer Reds & Fellow so I need to get some decent ammo loaded. So far Sako 75 is grouping just on an inch. Nathan has seen the groups. (I know pic's should be on here) the action is tight to remove from stock. It's a bit tight on the sides of the action. Gods instructions where to sand inside sides of the tight area! It looks like it is stringing or double grouping. So I will sand and run with it as is. Saw a mob of 20 reds ;O come out of the pines so I have itchy finger! I'm have permission to make a shooting table, bench, rest whatever I want to. The thing is that the stock will use it for a scratching station. I would make it with concrete if it was mine but the time to do boxing and mix concrete. .......yawn! I'm just going to use bags on a bales of hay and shoot my final loads I have. I'm thinking that around 45.5g behind 140g A Max/Partition is going to be around 2800fps from the results I've seen so far.
I'm all alone and surrounded by Deer! I'm in hunters heaven. Life is Good. I'll keep you posted and may sort some pictures for you to see. Don't be jealous!!! you're aloud to be Envious though.

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Good stuff Warwick, your plan sounds pretty good to me.

Relieve the stock, get it shooting reasonably (or limit your ranges to suit) and get into em!

See if Nathan can send you a picture of his “cow proof” bench, simple but works very well. You sit in the bench not at the bench like at most ranges with your elbow flopping around in the breeze.

I am a little jealous though…….

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
So last night my visitors and I went for a spotlight saw eyes but no shot available. My 70 year old mate did a Neil Armstrong impersonation Took a space walk and fell very hard between some rocks Ouch! Dislocated knuckle split finger and landed heavy on his 30-06. He's a tough old Boar got up and relocated the knuckle CLICK . His Lady was with us and we checked him over and we headed home.
This morning he tells me that he lost an eye years ago! That's why he didn't see the gap in the moon light. Today I checked out his Rifle Winchester model 70 SS. I checked the Simonds scope and bore sighted then fired a few to finish the zero. First time using a
30-06. What a lovely round to shoot. We went out this evening and saw two Red deer. I went down the valley with my 6.5 Swed and using 140g Amax @ 230yards dropped large Hind then a second hind with 140g Partition and a spiker in velvet Ran out I gave him 2 Partitions. Three Deer . What a great result. Lots of meat for everyone's families. The old fellow was over the moon with the success. My first deer with the Sightron and handloads. I'm sure happy. Thanks Nathan and everyone for your help and advice. Life is good!

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Excellent result Warwick and your hunting buddy sounds like he was a bit on the lucky side of things.
Did you take some pictures for the wound data base, l always seem to stuff that part up!

Been said many times on here the 30-06 is just a great versatile calibre to work with.
Be careful you will be buying one next…….hahahahaa
Winchester Extreme SS anyone?

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Phew it's a big job skinning and boning out three deer and back packing the meat out of steep boggy paddock. Two done one to go.! Can't drive too them so it's Shanks Pony recovery. My Swede did a great job with roll ya own boolets. The insides where pulp soup. Nice healthy fat Deer. Back steaks in the fridge will let sit for a few days and then crank up the barbecue. I could get the swedes chamber cut to make it into a 6.5-06? I'm not going to rush into anything yet! I'm happy to use the Swede as is and with realistic expectations. It's accurate and nice to use. The farmer wants the Goats gone. 120 g
A-Max ? I'm going to get the last Bambi out . Cheers guys.

Re: Shooting bench or foxhole?
Here in the flat lands I use a metal sawhorse with a benchrest top. I can drive up to a bean or cut corn field and shoot from the back of my truck. I use a similar rig when shooting from my two man ladder stand. Solid out to 1100 yds yards.
