Consistent case trimming for accuracy?

Hi guys, when reloading I'm using a lee quick trim case trimmer. It uses a die that goes in my press and I turn a crank style handle. I have just measured 5 .243 cases that I trimmed (20 turns) and the results had a tolerance of 0.005" over the 5. My question is this....is this an acceptable tolerance for accurate loads? Should it be better than this or is this fine as long as its under the max length?
Thanks in advance.

Hi James, I wouldn’t see it as an Issue.

I tested shells of different neck lengths in my 243 & 06 to experiment and seen no noticeable difference in group sizes. The 243 having both neck & F/L sized cases.
Most just trim to around min length with a Lee or similar and move on keeping it under max length as you said.

Consistency is a key issue in achieving accuracy. That said, I think .005" difference in neck length won't bust it for you. I'd be way more concerned about consistent neck tension and slippery exit from the neck.

Re: Consistent case trimming for accuracy?
Thanks guys. I played around with the trimmer a bit and got within 0.002".
I managed to find a load (just 3 shots) using nosler 95gr BT and RE-22 and got 0.451" at 100m so going to do more work around that (multiple 5 shot groups) to check consistency.
I'm hearing you deerndingo. I'm currently using lee dies so going to do 5 neck sized (collet) and 5 FL resized and see if there are any variations in group size. Been researching bushing dies so depending how next load development goes I might look into purchasing one.....
I'm pretty new to reloading so its taking me a while to get my head around it and trying not to over think things (a big problem of mine at times) and keep focused. Nathan's book is helping :0)
Thanks again guys and ill keep you posted.

Re: Consistent case trimming for accuracy?
Related question - I am using the Lee Trimmer (with the holder in a drill).

I am finding that the trimmer is scratching the inside of the necks.

Is this a major issue, and any idea how I can prevent it?

I am going to take to the trimmer mandrel/guide with a bit of high grit sandpaper - though I don't notice any obvious burrs. Any other suggestions?

I have not seen any major issues with neck length variations but I have yet to test changes in velocity (general ES) in a dedicated fashion.

Kerry, if you cannot find any major burrs on the mandrel, there should be no major burrs within the case necks. But yes- it can pay to polish the mandrels. Normally have to anyway, just to get the fit right.

See... it's common sense like that Nathan... :)

True. Something is scratching them up - they certainly aren't scratched prior to it.
