Federal Trophy Bonded Tip 7mm

Hi All,
Any thoughts on this projectile for the 7mm RM. I don't see it mentioned in the KB or the book. I did read a write-up in Rifle Shooter and it sounded OK for 50mm to 400m.

So, no one know anything about these things. They got a write up in a recent copy of Rifle Shooter and I was wondering...

I read the KB and the book and I didn't see anything about eh Fed Trophy Bonded Tip in either. I use 162gr SSTs, but was wondering about the Federal offering.

G’day Mate
I haven’t used them myself, but some of my mates hand load the same Bear claw bonded projectile and are very happy with them on [big] animals, rather expensive!!! (I use cheaper pills) The Bear Claw are effective on heavy animals like Samba out to 300m.

Re: Federal Trophy Bonded Tip 7mm
Hi Deerndingo, I have mentioned the performance of the TBBC and Tipped TBBC bullets in the KB at different points. This is an excellent bullet design, almost a hybrid between the Barnes bullet (having a copper shank) and core bonded bullets (having a lead core bonded ogive). For tough game, it is the best of both worlds, having the potential to produce greater trauma than the TSX bullet. The TBBC generally produces slightly less penetration than the Barnes TSX and loses about 20% weight but the trade off is worth it. The tipped version is great due to the hollow point and very wide frontal area behind the tip to enhance energy transfer on impact. (Peter B, if you are reading this, would be very similar to shallow / wide hollow pointing your 6.5x55 factory Norma Oryx ammo to increase speed of killing / trauma on lean game)

This bullet design does have its limitations like all core bonded / high weight retention designs. Wounding becomes narrower at impact velocities of around 2400fps, much narrower below 2200fps which is the limit for me. So there are range limitations. And as suggested, there are also penetration limitations if bullet weights are not matched to game weights.

Hi Nathan,
So can a I take it that for light game like goats and on up to upper thoracic shots on red deer its a bit tough, but great for busting a shoulder. Also, a good medium (600m) to short range projectile by the sounds of it.

Re: Federal Trophy Bonded Tip 7mm
Just for giggles I thought I'd run the numbers. Using the 160gr pill from a load obtaining a starting fps of 3013 by 350 metres it has slowed to 2174fps. If Nathan's experience is that its getting a bit too narrow in the wound channel by 2200 then though the projectile is a great heavy hitter it hasn't got much expansion left in it after the 350 metre mark. Which, by the way, is as far as many hunter will ever take a shot anyway.

As I said, just for giggles.

Thanks all.

Nathan,
I must say that I was surprised by the performance difference between the SST and TBBC.
