Hodgdon superperformance gun powder 270 win?

Hey everyone, I have been hearing stories on the internet (NZ shooting forums mostly) that this powder is really pushing the velocity up in the 270 win, like 145 ELD-X at 3050+@ 57grains..with sub MOA, Is this the magic powder that will get my 150 grainers past the 2950 threshold ( I have close to 300 hotcors and SST's+ 100 ELD-X at home. very little reloading Data with the 270 win around.. anyone on this site have any experience? I am at the verge of buying a couple of pounds. ( powder is pretty hard to come buy in NZ). Just for perspective I have a REM 700 CDL( in good nick, fully bedded etc etc) with a magnum contour 24in trueflight barrel, she is heavy and I would like to load her up to near max potential whilst keeping safety in mind.

Hi Michael, yes Superformance powder is impressive in the .270, especially when used in conjunction with the heavier 150gr projectiles. The burn rate is similar to 2217 which as you will probably know is too bulky for the .270. SF by contrast is a fine, high bulk density spherical powder.

Regarding 150gr bullets, accuracy tends to be a bit sub par until the case is quite full and velocities high (well over 3000fps). The one issue with this powder is that while it is possible to obtain high speeds and good accuracy, the ES can at times be quite high (too high for long range). Outcomes depend on case fill (a lower fill tends to produce a higher SD) and neck tension (to a lesser extent). Firing pin spring power (age of etc) is also a consideration with this powder, a subject few think about these days. In some instances however, one simply cannot overcome the high ES and must simply part ways with this powder (again regarding LR shooting).

A good powder to experiment with, certainly more interesting than the 145gr ELD-X. But do be mindful of limitations.

I cannot condone the following as safe in any other rifle, The following is not advice and is instead merely my own experience: When testing 150gr loads in U.S brass, I found 56gr SF to be a good starting point but with a high SD, the same result as I have had with other cartridges if the Supeformance case fill is too low. The rifle began to settle at 57gr (3020fps), experimentation and fine tuning above this.

I read recently that Browning are now producing 270 rifles with 7.5 twist, which begs the question: Why?

Scott.......why does a dog lick its doggy bits??? because it can

but seriously the 160grn nosler partition...the heavy bergers
and dare I say it??to up preformance of monos due to increased spin...and dont try n tell me thats not a thing... it has to be,its always been there but has been ignored for years
when they brought out the little .277s and the really hot big ones,a faster twist barrel was going to be made and it was only matter of time before they got poked on .270win and folks have been waiting for it....
the other one is for folks to play with subsonics...I say play with all seriousness as I ve done it......and have very firm views on it..go all out and rangefind and dial after much testing or keep it for rabbits n hares ,close range goats in open country and finishing shots.... when it works its hohum/vanilla and when your shot is even slightly off it sucks bigtime.

Hi Mike. I’m sure many 270 owners want theirs longer, but that’s why Browning/Win developed the 6.8 Westerner. They’re not offering loaded 270 ammunition with long bullets. Who do they think is going to buy a 7.5 twist X-Bolt? Handloaders? Are the untold millions of 270 fans going to retire their favorite hunting rifles and buy new X-Bolts, when they could rebarrel their old rigs for less than half the cost?
