If I was feeling sporty today I would have put some of the information on page 400 of "The Practical Guide to Long Range Shooting" to use. I just couldn't garinty the outcome. I had a bull moose on my front door step, drawn to a pumpkin. Who has stories of having to had use a knife??[b]

Hey Gerry. Been there. Moose are just so freakin' nosy. You hide in the bush, dressed in camo from head to toe, make one little grunt....and the next thing you know, they are almost stepping on you. Now I've never had to pull my knife on one, but it is a little unnerving to be so close you can see their eyelashes. But Holy Crap on a Cracker, it gets the adrenal gland working. I love it!

Re: Knives
Where was your side arm? 357 or 44 Mag with a good bullet would be the answer wouldn't it? Or are you not aloud them where you are? Admittedly I don't live in a place where Bear, Moose, Coyotes, Mountain Lions and Wolf's reside! If I did I wouldn't go outside without some Smokeless medical insurance at hand? Or I'd have a good dog as an accomplice to get some early warning signs of trouble ahead.

Re: Knives
Mr Marflitt the Alaska Dept. of fish and game did a study of firearms used in protection of life and property against bears. They listed the firearms in order of effectiveness. Pistols scored very low as I'm sure you would have guessed. It's a common recommendation around here to remove the front sight from a pistol. The thought being that it won't hurt as much when the bear shoves it up your a** when you are done shooting. A pistol does provide some feeling of comfort, it's far better than nothing.

Re: Knives
Thanks for that help Gerry. I know nothing about bears other than the Our world wild life documentaries on the TV.
Come on Nathan we know that you live with two amazing girl's but feminizing a Moose with lipstick is probably a felony in the state of Alaska. I wonder if the Dept of fush in gayme have done a study of Camp hurs to see how effeminate it is?
Gerry as with any Tool. It's only as good as the operator. Lots of practice at the range and knowledge of how and what to do. Like don't get into a shoot out with the angry beast in the first place. Make yourself small and quietly back down. Learn about the animals traits and what to and not to do? I'd rather have a pistol (not aloud them in NZ ) than a knife if that horrible situation was to eventuate.
The meanest situation I've been in was a bull charge at me when I was 14 On the farm while trying to get it out of a paddock for my Dad. Sitting on the tractor he said to quietly walk around and move it up the flats. I asked him " what should I do if it charges " ? He says Call his bluff! Raise your arms yell and run at it! It was all going well until the dogs hopped off the trailer thinking they should help..... Mr bull paws the ground and charged from 30 yards and so I raised my arms let out a death cry and charged at him! I'm thinking that this will end bad. At the last few yards he broke to his right missing the loud idiot....Phew!.. There paint them lips Nathan. That was the most adrenaline that I've ever experienced. I've been in a few beaut fights done skydiving and they where nothing in comparison. I think that a bear charge would be twice as terrifying as that Bull was? I guess what I'm saying is. BE PREPARED! use the Seven P's

We're so lucky here in New Zealand the bush is a pretty safe place. The worst we have are wild cattle , Stags during the roar, wild pigs and gunned up unskilled once a year hunters. You tube pig hunting NZ link below of a close call. Happy new year everyone.

Re: Knives
Mr.Marflitt I cannot tell you if femimizing a moose is legal or illegal. Nathan's comment did give me pause. Do you know if he has a sticker of a rainbow and unicorn on his quad? I must say that it is impressive at age 14 to stand your ground with a bull charging. I am not a bear expert. I just happen to live in a location with lots of bears. Bears are prolithic eaters. Go to a known food source sit still and glass. Odds are good that you will get a shot. There is more to it, but if you boil it down there really isn't much more to it. The movie "Grizzly Man" about Timothy Treadwell is interesting. He does so many things that I just would NEAVER do. The hair on the back of your neck will stand up at times and in the end what you think should happen does.
