thoughts on the 9.3

so just interested on what peoples thoughts are on the 9.3calibre selection after what nathan was saying about bush rifles. I've had my eyes on the 9.3 for some time thinking i would quite like to purchase one for a dedicated close range bush rifle. i was heavily leaning towards the 9.3x57 but the other day a nice husqvarna 9.3x62 popped up on trade me. unfourtnaly it sold before i could make up my mind. does anyone out there use something in 9.3? whats your thoughts on it? it seems to be gaining traction recently from what i can see. my local gun shop rekons they are selling before they can get them on the shelf.

i must say the more i hunt the more i lean towards bigger bore rifles, ya just can't beat a big hunk of lead trucking along impacting with the force of a brick shit house. currently hunting mainly with a 375 h and h mag and every trigger squeeze puts a smile on my face and a look of amazement and awe in the faces of bystanders...... sorry i'll stop drooling on about my beloved cz now.

9.3X62...Great calibre, it's the slightly beefed up Euro Whelen.

Easy to work with and very straight forward to reload with no belt etc. to worry about, I think of it as my "big" 308.

I don't use factory loads but l can vouch for the 250 grain Woodleigh RN over a mild load of 2209, stops Sambar in a big hurry.
I have read many great reports with photos of it being used on Brumbies, Water Buff, Scrub cattle, feral dogs & mud encrusted Bores with excellent results out to approx. 250mt.

Happily recommend it as a scrub gun calibre and a currant factory offering, love the mid bores!

Re: thoughts on the 9.3
i can't comment on the 9.3 as i haven't used one been interesting reading martins post on here about his, it sounds like there's a reason many old calibers are still in use.

Sebastian i suggest you contact colonial ammunition company in taranaki if you like the look of those husky's (i sure hell like the look of them) as he seems to bring in a lot of second hand ones in different models and calibers specially the 9.3 variants.
[email protected] is his email he advertises a lot in the nz guns and hunting mag

Re: thoughts on the 9.3
cheers for the feedback martin, it sounds like it will get the job done with nz game! I'm wondering if I'm using it for close range i should go to the 9.3x57 to cut back on recoil and overall weight and plus i have other x57 cal so have a good supply of brass. is x62 brass hard to come by in nz??
thanks thomas i'll check them out. do they list on trademe? I've seen a lot of huskys on there recently.
yeah they are bloody nice looking rifles and the price is pretty reasonable as well.

Re: thoughts on the 9.3
Because l use this rifle is the tight stuff & on the move l only use PPU brass which l buy as cheap loaded ammo and strip down. This way l don't cry when l can't find it, like say expensive Lapua brass!!!

BUT...........l have had to anneal the cases from new as the neck temper is absolutely crap, really crap.
Other brands of brass are available here in OZ but l don't bother with them to keep costs to a minimum. I have 1 moa groups with a very mild load of 2209 (sorry can't remember the speeds) and that's more than good enough for a bush gun (as Nathan told me!!).

As a reloaders Sebastian we can manipulate big cartridges to be pussy cats then crank them up when needed, so l 'd stay with the 62 every time! This is why l have mild loads and light for calibre 225 & 250 grain pills, in what l consider a very light rifle, even with the laminated stock. If needed l can crank them up or go to a 290-350 grain pill. Recoil is not an issue in the bush, it pushes rather than snaps.

I would go with the varmint model if l had the choice again and shorten it to suit bush work as the T3 lite barrel is a bit thin, but that's just my preferance.

Re: thoughts on the 9.3
thats some good advice martin, go big and load it to the situation.
ok thats good to know so along the lines of 375 recoil nice and rolling push not a sharp jab.
yeah I'm with you on that one i like a decent barrel weight. i had a tikka t3 lite in 6.5 and it used to frustrate the pants off me.
I'm very much liking the look of husqvarna at the moment so might shop around and see what i can find.
what type of game do you hunt with the 9.3 if you don't mind me asking?
any issues with lighter framed game with the projectiles your using?

Re: thoughts on the 9.3
Barrel is standard, 22" l think.

It's my Sambar gun but with those Woodleigh round nose pills l would happily knock any size deer l come across & down to as small as a feral dog.
That combo has taken very young yearling poddies and all sizes up to full bodied animals & all inside 80 yards at all sorts of angles and placements without fuss. Last little bloke was cross body, behind the leg to save meat damage and it only went 10mts or so.

For something a little different I have re-sized .375 225gn Interlocks to try this year. Some of the factory loads may be to tuff as it's the entry level dangerous game calibre so care may be needed picking them.

One thing these mid powered, mid bores seem to excel at is less meat bruising when comparing similar shots against say my 180gn 30-06.

Re: thoughts on the 9.3
I think that was old Husky sold it to a chap on the west coast, I replaced it with a Browning Maral in 9.3x62. The 9.3x62 is an incredibly versatile calibre with projectile weights ranging from 232 all the way up to 320gr. In my experience this cartridge produces outstanding performance. I have shot goats, pigs and deer all have been bang flop kills with no running game at all. Upon further inspection devastating damage to vital organs. ranges varied from 20yds out to 200yds. Had great results using speer 270gr projectiles on goats and light framed deer (the speers are rather soft) and the Hornady 286gr sp-rp projectiles. I use 2206H powder (H4895).
