More Questions about Twist Rates

Because it's winter, and I am suitably bored, I delved into my safes to see what was what. I found some rifles/actions that I have no idea where or who they came from. So I am going to pull them apart and make something.
I settled on the .243 hole in my calibre selection and started mentally building. Looking at my favourite bullet supplier, Hornady has again the best that I can see. However, their reloading manual says that the 105 gr A-Max will not stabilize in 1-10" and slower barrels. That shouldn't be a problem, I just use a 1-8" or 1-8-1/2" twist. Right? But what happens when I want to try to use the 95 gr SST? Will the quicker rate stabilize the SST at 2900fps+ ?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: More Questions about Twist Rates
I read that the ideal twist for the 105 Amax is 1/8 twist.

Thanks, Jim. Any word on whether the 1-8" will work with the 95 grain? [b]

Yes. The 8 will shoot everything but the longest 115gr VLDs that are really
Reswrved for the XC and 6mmx47 lapua wildcat for long range score comp.
Also be careful.with light pillsnwith very thin jackers as they might come apart.

Thanks, Eloy. That was what I needed to know. Now it's off to town to shop for dies and bullets. I'll get the barrel coming on it's way, and we are good to go. This is almost as good as Christmas![b]

I use 105gr Speer through my Mannlicher .243. It has the standard factory 24" barrel which I am guessing is 1:10 (have never actually checked it). With only very basic load development I managed to get it to about 0.7" at 100m. No doubt a lighter projectile would give me better results but as this rifle only gets used to a maximum of 200m this was never going to be an issue.

Re: More Questions about Twist Rates
Hi Paul, I tend to see it like this:

1:10- general .243 user 75 to 100 grain bullets, a bit of varmint work and light medium game work.

1:9- Folk who want to dabble a bit, play with some of the heavier bullets but also play with light bullets. A slight risk if wanting to set up a dedicated long distance heavy bullet rig.

1:8- Dedicated long range rigs / heavy bullets. Risk with lighter bullets (finicky / light jacket woes as Eloy said).

I really don't like twist rate calculators all that much as they fail to take into account factors discussed in my book series. I actually prefer the old generic barrel selection guides.

Re: More Questions about Twist Rates
Thanks, all. For some reason, this twist thing is beyond my grasp. I know that it will affect the stability, etc., but to retain all this for each of my calibres just makes my brain hurt. And then top it off with all the www.gungurus.com everywhere with conflicting stories and no definite answers, it is so frustrating. Ahhh, but wait........I have found my mecca.....nirvana is at hand........I am on TBR, all is good once again.
