Gentlemen,

I'm now the owner of a Dakota Arms Model 97 in .300 Win Mag. Inspecting the rifle, it comes factory bedded, but I'm unable to discern the quality and material.....Your opinion is appreciated!

Overall the quality and smoothness is superb...

Saludos,

RLS.

And last but not least, the full rig with optics and Burris rings....

Hi Ricardo, it looks a bit like Devcon, hard to say. Whatever it was, it was a stiff mix that struggled to migrate.

The pillars were attached to the action, then the action and pillars dropped into the mortice.

Gunmakers sometimes bed to a dummy action, not the actual action you have. And even if it was bedded to the actual action, it will not have its critical relief points addressed. To this end, you will need to check for pinching and will most likely need to scrape the bottom of the recoil lug recess, the sides of the lug recess and the front face of the recess. This does not have to be gaping, just a very light relief to allow the the rifle to bounce forwards under recoil, then return to battery without becoming hung up.

Check the fit first before you set about scraping.

It will also pay to do a grease imprint (action and barrel knox) to check that the barrel mates to the barrel bedding. This rifle may well have been bedded to the actual action and barrel but again, you need to check that everything lines up precisely rather than closely. If the barrel only touches some of the barrel bedding, free float it entirely.

It is good to see Dakota actually bedding the knox area, few other gun makers really think about this.

Hopefully she's a shooter. Certainly looks the part, a very appealing rig with a lot of time put into it. You can see why Dakota are highly regarded. If you take your time to check these last points, it will really help finish the job nicely.

Just an interesting note and it's hard to tell %100 from the photos, looks like the whole bed from the mag well back has been sanded.

If it has, would be interesting to know why they did it?
Relief in the middle of action maybe so it only sits on the rear pillar?

Very grateful for the replies, I'll check all points and come back to the forum....

On a side note, I've hunted all my life (to short-ish ranges / 300yds tops) and reading the new book has humbled me in every way possible, I now see a great deal of Ego tied into shooting and disarming this beast will let me become a real, proficient shooter. The work is proving to be hard on me psychologically but challenging and engaging in all other matters....Again, I'll report my findings to the group.

Saludos!!!!

Ricardo.

Additional shots of the trigger and knox/recoil lug (very short knox).

That trigger looks like the one I made for a crossbow that I made as a teenrager . It was wooden stock and the bow spring was two fiberglass electric fence stands thru a grooved length of 4x2. They were bloody lethal the bolts where 6 inch alloy finned fiberglass stands pointed on the bench grinder! Private boarding school was such a creative place. Lol Yeah we got the CANE! (Arse's whipped 6 lashes ) for making them. How crisp and adjustable is that one? You will have to keep it clean and the pivot pins lubricated. At least it's easy to access.

UPDATE - There's good news and bad news.

Bad: the Dakota proprietary trigger is only adjustable to 2.5lbs and NO aftermarket trigger will fit it, this is a dealbreaker and unpleasant news to me.

Good: found a willing buyer for the rifle at a very good price and I'll swap to a Nesika Sporter in .300WM, which has the Rem 700 market open to it. (http://www.nesikafirearms.com/sporter.html)

Keep you posted. Saludos!

That trigger spring could have been altered and adjusted below 2.5lb but not to worry. The new gun is a bit chunkier in the barrel and stock to help tame recoil.

Re: What type of bedding is this?? Dakota Arms factory setup...
The reality is that in Mexico, one has to bootleg quality guns. I'm gravitating towards having a quality platform (Nesika - as stated in the Rifles book) that has the Rem aftermarket open to it if needed. Dakota guns are beautiful, but it seems everything is proprietary - hence making it difficult to tailor make it to my needs....

Tough choice I had to make!!!

Saludos.
