Bedding a Howa 223 in Walnut stock. (brothers fallow rifle)

A big thanks to Nathan once again for his bedding products & supportive advise.

After working the HACT trigger over I've now just bedded my brothers 223. which is in a walnut stock that has aluminium pillars. This is the forth Howa I've bedded all in different stock materials. Prior to bedding it would shoot 60G Hornady Varmints at almost 1/2 minute but would not shoot the 60G Partition very well at all.

Since bedding this rifle it now shoots both the partition & varmint at 1/2 minute with almost identical point of impact at 100 yds. They are both different powder loads with minor differences in bullet jump.(varmint 20 thou, partition 40 thou) The partition load is the lesser charge with bigger bullet jump yet it produces more recoil. (not that it's a lot). It seems that because the partition is harder(due to the copper partition) it takes more force & therefore pressure to swage the bullet through the rifling. Nathan thought this could be the case & I tend to agree. The parallel sides of the partition is longer than the varmint too so perhaps this creates more friction/resistance? Food for thought.

Interested in other peoples thoughts...

Regardless my brother is stoked as this is now a lovely accurate & durable fallow rifle. . . & we have learnt a lot yet again.

Thanks Nathan... Legend!

Great result Jon,

It still amazes me the effect harmonics have & the little things that can excite or settle them down. POI generally settles with bedding but they all have a personality to work with hey!

I have found the same recoil results with other cals using different pills, l just put it down to bearing surface, the larger, the more drag type thing but copper compound would have to play a part as well.

I'm about to setup the same as you have for varminting & cheap plinking so should be interesting so see. Being that the recoil is so low, small changes will be easily felt as you say.

But as l said great result, Nathans bedding systems work well. It's really rewarding when it all comes together.

Hey thanks Martin. Yes, very pleased & very rewarding. Feeling confident now with bedding the Howas & working them over. I rate them.

Yes it's great to see them getting back up towards where they were Jon, an affordable rifle that takes well to tunning. .5moa is very often achievable with these which makes them well worth the time invested.

Not as slick as say a Tikka but a true work horse that will get the job done without the price tag of many others. I'm looking forward to setting up the 20" heavy barrelled version.
After bouncing my Ideas off Nathan, l now know mag extensions are very easy to do so the longer pills won't be an issue, like in most other 223 sized actions. And the twist rate will also work with the bigger stuff so should be fun.

Sorry for the delay. Sounds like an interesting project Martin.

Last winter I built my father who is 80 an 8x57 using a Howa action & 24 in Shillen magnum contour barrel all bedded in a Boyd laminate stock with Sightron S2 4-16X42.

That was one of the first with HACT trigger which I worked out how to modify myself no worries.

The bolt handle length is good for dad as he has arthritis in his hands & struggles with the old Mauser bolts.

This is a half inch rifle too as my 6.5x55 Howa...when I'm up to the task.

Dad loves the 8X57 Mauser calibre & I do have to say for general deer stalking, particularly reds it's a very reliable & humane killer.

Cheers
