Bedding kits- question to customers

Hi all, we have been noticing an ongoing price rise with regards to shipping the kits overseas. Up to now, we have avoided passing these costs on to customers. This means that in some situations, we get hit really hard for postage, wiping out any profits. Some weeks, we are reliant on kiwi sales and shipping costs to subsidize foreign sales. You get your product, we get by.

Anyway, getting to the point. If we omit the printed instructions, it could save us some money and offset more of the shipping costs. I was thinking of providing a single page letter head with a thank you and a referral to the site or the Accurizing book and youtube (and to myself) for instructions. It also means that users get more instructions via the book and online because there is only so much info we can include with the kits. It's only a small cost saver but is also a time saver for us during assembly.

Does anybody have anything to say for or against this idea?

I'm for it. In the "digital age" everything one buys these days has a digital manual to read online. You would be hard pressed to find someone that wouldn't have access to a computer to access the info. Considering they probably had to use a computer to buy the stuff!

You know my thoughts Nathan but for everyone else,

Online & you tube is the way to go and better still info contained in your books. Subsidising international sales with local is not a great situation to be in. Freight charges are what they are and just part of the global-online world we live in.
Multiple kit purchases could also help, with the user having a spare if things don’t quiet go to plan.

I have now seen firsthand the incredible efforts that Nathan & Steph put into helping people and this is just one small everyday example.

I think reducing your cost without devaluing your product is a great idea. I read the books, watched the videos and read and followed the instructions. Maybe it's my age but I am most comfortable with hard copy instructions. I make notes and refer back to them as I go. Make the instructions available as a PDF file that can be printed or not at the discretion of your customers. Thanks for all that you both do.

Re: Bedding kits- question to customers
i think as long instructions are available there shouldn't be a problem. there must also be a lot of return customers to that don't need a 2nd set of instructions. i was so stoked when i received my kits its refreshing to see the emphasis put on the quality of the product and the customer service not flashy labels and marketing.
the fact you have put the question up for feed back speaks volumes of how you and steph value your customers.
could even have it as a user pays for instructions on top of kit price if needed

As mentioned by others I see no reason why you can't just refer to the online info and your book. Having read the sections on stock stabilising and bedding I can confirm the info in the book and online is far more detailed anyway. Being a visual person I prefer the youtube videos anyway.
Cheers

Re: Bedding kits- question to customers
Yes great idea. I got most of my instruction from the vid and the book. Another idea would be for users that are on their second or third job they may not need the plasticine.... I saved and re used the plasticine. Could be something guys could do to help?

Good move. Most old guys (not me) are better at visual learning anyway. Providing a link to a video looks more professional these days. You have a video for this already.

This is my opinion not my advice

+1 on online instructions. As others have said, it's the standard way to do it nowadays.

Nathan, I think your freight rates are more than reasonable. You are exactly half way round the globe from me and I only pay ~twice the rate of domestic! I mean, you are not Amazon and therefore you have to pay 'normal' freight rates. In other words I'm willing to pay more. A short note on your site and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Re: Bedding kits- question to customers
Yes do it. You can also put the price of the kits up $5 you can't keep it that price forever. A set of printable instructions on the site is the way to go. Keep pushing the donations message to you guy's give amazing service.. Keep at it.

I'm going to order pretty soon, and really hope no heavy-set instructions come with it.

Not pretending to give business advice, since I'm not knowledgeable about NZ, but it's a very good idea to have the bedding kits be much more than comfortably profitable so we can keep having access to this page's wonderful resources...I wouldn't mind paying extra for the privilege.

Saludos from Mexico.

Re: Bedding kits- question to customers
OK, thanks guys. I will try to set up a PDF, then set about the single print page for the kits. I will still have to bring postage more in line with actual costs but will try to minimize changes as much as possible.

Thanks everyone, we really appreciate the support.

Hi all;

I agree, a single note with the kit will suffice. If you order online, you can get the instructions too.

Maybe attach the PDF and links with the order confirmation e-mail?

I don´t know what makes the price for the shipping... bulk or weight? If bulk have something to do, you can use a smaller container. It´s great to have a big container to mix the compound, but the one you send is well bigger that needed.

The hardener container allso seem to be expensive... and again somewhat "oversized" to it´s function. You just opened it and bin it. A simple plastic bag, like the ones with the ketchup and mustard on the McDonalds will suffice. Or any other simple can. Labs/Pharmacys use very little containers that can do the trick. When I was typing, a pic worth far more than a thousand words... I mean something like that, maybe a touch bigger:

That way, you could save costs (for all the kits, no matter where you ship them) without changing quality or funcionality. Hope that makes sense...

Re: Bedding kits- question to customers
Hi Alvaro, we get charged by weight, not bulk. That allows us to use the big punnet which is in turn used as a mixing and pouring bowl, its size helps minimize air bubbling. I don't want to re-arrange the packaging at this point as we have a good system at present. But thanks for the input.

I'm in the US and have had 7 or 8 of your bedding kits. I don't order 1 at at time . I don't mind paying the freight cost. I wouldn't mind having the option for air freight thrown into the equation . With the internet and your books out there there is no need for printed instructions. Your kits save me a lot of time considering the sourcing of materials. Your a great resource Nathan and I don't think you should short change yourself. Your kit's, and knowledge have helped me produce 5 extremely accurate rifles.

Re: Bedding kits- question to customers
Thanks John. The kits are sent air freight. Surface would take a few months from here, waiting for consignment etc.
