loading .308 Winchester with the Hornady 168 grain A-Max

My Hornady manual version 9, shows that your .308 Win article recommends muzzle velocities that seem to be a bit above maximum listed.

My rifle is the Remington 700P LTR in .308 and I have been working up loads, so when I read your article about the A-Max bullets, I became quite interested. Can you perhaps post or email me the load that you used to obtain the 2700fps. I will start loading a few rounds in 2 grain increments closer to the max shown in the manual and see how it goes in the meantime.

Due to the freebore in this rifle, I have been loading to maximum COAL as published in the Hornady manual. Have been getting well under .5 moa with the 155 gr A-Max bullets.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry Bryan just a quick note, when you read the "COAL" article, you can probably just fast forward to the last two paragraphs - or there abouts.

Hope this helps.

Mike

PS. in my SPS Tactical I was getting about 2670 FPS with this load. AS the barrel opened up (from getting rusty!) velocity went up to 2710 fps. I have a new barrel now and have to go through my load testing again. Good Luck!

Thanks, and sorry for the time replying to your post.

I resolved the issue with the Amax seating using a headspace gauge and set the overall length to what my magazine would allow making sure the bullet had enough in the case neck to be flsuh with the shoulder as a priority.

It is doing 3/8 inch five shot concentric groups now, so am pleased with it. Loaded up some 200 grain Nosler partitions for close range bush work, and with the A-max sighted 3 inches high at 100 yards, these are close enough to the center of the bull to use with the same setting if an elk pops up at short range.
