Re: long rainge hunting cartridges book
Hi Robert, the point of discussing primers was to suggest that changing primers could be used as a means to manipulate burn rates and also manipulate ES. There is room for experimentation both ways. But- if for example a hunter is using a double base spherical powder such as US 869, it pays to use a magnum primer.

The Federal 215 magnum primer was designed for the largest Weatherby cartridges burning up to 120 grains powder. This is nearly double the charge used in the 7mm Rem Mag.

I don't know where the "you have to" use a magnum primer remark would have come from regarding the 7mm Rem Mag. Perhaps it was simply extra caution in light of ball powders.

Examples of altering performance:

26" barrel, H1000 / 2217 powder- Fed 210 primer to slow burn rate slighty.

26" barrel, Retumbo / 2225 powder- Fed 215 Mag primer to speed burn rate slightly and manipulate ES.

22-24" barrel, H1000 / 2217 powder- Federal 215 Mag primer to speed burn rate.

22-24" barrel, H4831sc / 2213sc powder, federal 210 primer to manipulate and keep throat cooler.

Plenty of room for experimentation.

You'll need to work out the max COAL for your individual rifle Robert, then seat for about .2mm / 10 thou jump. This will most likely have you at around 86.8mm or 3.417" with the 162gr A-Max but its hard to say. Play it safe and do the measurements rather than using this info.

OK, yours is normal spec, good to hear.

Yes, I do like to start a bit closer but if you have already made up loads, not to worry. See how they go.
