Andrew MurrayHi all,Has anyone had experience with Swan Barrels located in QLD Australia? I'm looking to re-barrel my 303 and this name came up, it's close to home which is a bonus but only if they are worthwhile. Happy to take some recommendations for Brisbane-ish gunsmiths. Cheers, Andrew |

mark whiteleyRe: Allan Swan Rifle Barrelshave seen faults in the rifling in swan barrels with a bore scope when discussing what barrel to use with my Smith as if they have poor quality control that made me look at the IBI barrels sold by cleaver firearms in QLD that are in every way a very high quality match grade barrel that my Smith said at the time in all the name barrels he has had setup in his lathe none have ever been as straight as these after he chambered three different barrels for me, he thought the first may be a one off but happily he said they were all as good as the first. l can also say that all shoot very well, all well under 1/4 moa consistently. l hope this is of help |

Andrew MurrayRe: Allan Swan Rifle BarrelsG'day Mark,I went ahead and got the barrel. It appears to shoot fairly well. I haven't truly isolated it from other potential faults including my own. I am looking forward to the journey however. The intent would be to use it as a scrub gun out to 300 if I can get good enough with it. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Allan Swan Rifle BarrelsA cheeky photo from the weekend just gone.
Taken at about 150m moving left to right. Cartridge was 180 PPU factory ammo. The exit wound was approx 1" across. The animal took a little while to drop, but ultimately only moved about 30 metres. Which did make me think perhaps there is value in making up a handload with ELD-M or similar that can expand at the lower speeds that will be required to utilise the old military sites. |

Nathan FosterRe: Allan Swan Rifle BarrelsHi Andrew, great to see the old Enfield given a new lease on life. I assume you were working on it over the ANZAC weekend which would have added another dimension to the process. Also no doubt, you have read 'A fortunate Life'. Many Australians developed excellent shooting skills prior to the war, living in the outback. After volunteering and training with the Enfield, soldiers had to prove they could shoot out to 900 yards. One must understand however, that the rifles, particularly at this early stage were carefully tuned (pressure points added or relieved) by armorers during proofing. So yes, you will need to experiment to get yours into optimal form. If you want to reload, see if you can find the .311" 174gr Sierra SMK. You will need to increase the meplat a wee bit for hunting. Dragging and counting passes over a sharpening stone is sufficient provided you can keep everything relatively square. See photos in the Cartridges book (modifications). |
