7mm-08 garbage

Hornady released this video today, extolling the virtues of the 7mm-08 as an elk cartridge. I don’t know why I watch shit like this, because Nathan has taught me to know better. The conversation starts with 3 relatively intelligent grown men discussing their beards. That’s a dead-giveaway. But confirmation bias somehow draws me into suffering through hours of blather about BC, SD, FPS, FPE, etc.

It could have been worse Scott, at least they weren’t advocating the 6.5 cm

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
True, Vince. But why would they piss on their own shoes when they just released an adequate cartridge, the 7mm PRS? Supposed “experts” in the US seem to think telling people what they want to hear is more important than giving them good advice. If you can’t handle recoil, you’ve no business hunting elk.

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
I'll throw my 2 cents or more accurately just my experience with a like powered cartridge and big game.

I feel your sentiment on that particular parts of that podcast and how they frame some of their statements. A bit overly positive... (to put it nicely)? I do understand your reaction to degree. They are marketing people though, that's how they roll.

That being said, I haven't hunted many Elk and don't shoot a 7mm-08 much (so obviously I'm no expert on the specific topic). I understand Elk are pretty tough, maybe tougher than moose? They are smaller, but have that reputation. Maybe they also have that reputation a bit because so many more people hunt them and fail? I'm not sure there. Either way, I would likely not use 7mm-08 as an end all, be all, for that hunting purpose.

That being said, I do use a custom 7x57 for the majority of my big game hunting now. I own many larger rifles and a have drifted away from them for various reasons. My high volume of recreational shooting being one of them.

To the point, I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and hunt moose, caribou, and Dall Sheep every year. Not always successfully, but I've never really had any issues when I do find a "shootable" animal.

The 7x57 is similar to the 7mm-08 in ballistics though it has a definite advantage using longer heavier bullets due to having more case capacity. I currently use 180gr. ELDMs at 2592 fps avg. for all the aforementioned animal species. I know, 7mm-08 won't launch 180s that fast without being a bit spicy.

So far with that rifle, I have killed five moose at ranges between 30 and 400 yards, over a dozen caribou 50 to 600 yards, and two sheep at 371 and 520 yards. I've also killed a black bear at 10 yards with that rifle, but that probably could have been done with a bow...or a spear...

None of those animals ran more than 50 yards (not including one sheep rolling >500 ft off a cliff side). Most of them including the moose went less than 10 yards or were DRT.

My point is that for hunting elk or elk sized animals at close ranges (0-200) I don't think a heavy bullet in a 7mm-08 would be a bad choice necessarily. Especially for a recoil sensitive shooter.
Would it be my first choice? No, surely not. I also know that people who say you "need" a .338 Win Mag or .375 H&H to hunt moose have obviously not hunted many moose.

Anyhow, good observation on the somewhat hyped podcast content, also annoys me a bit. Thanks for the link too, makes it easy to immediately see the exact referred content.

Good luck out there,

-Daniel

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
Here in Sweden we shoot thousands of Moose with 6.5x55 and with a good hit I'm the lungs they go down pretty quickly.

I dot think that a Elk is any tougher to punch a hole in .

I f the hitting speed is enough to expand the bullet the animal will die

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
Here in the US, we wound thousands of animals with under-powered cartridges. Wildlife management biologists can’t keep track of the number of wounded animals that run off and die.

My reaction to the Hornady video about the 7mm-08 was more about why weren’t they touting their new 7mmPRC?

Sure, the 6.5x55 and 7x57 are fine for perfect, broadside, behind the shoulder shots. Nobody can win an argument saying they’re not.

But anybody who argues that weaker cartridges are fine because they make recoil-sensitive shooters better shots is admitting he can’t take recoil.

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
Good afternoon Gents:

I've seen many elk taken down with a 7mm-08, 280 Rem, 7RSAUM, 7mm Rem mag, and 270 Win. This is pretty much all our family has used in the last 35 years. Pretty much a 7mm family, and I wouldn't say a 7mm is not enough for elk. The only difference between these cartridges, is the reach.

Shot placement and bullet selection is key, regardless of cartridge. Last fall 2 hunters lost 2 wounded deer, both shot with 300 Win Mags, more than enough cartridge for a small coues deer, but why were they lost? poor shot placement.

I've used the 7mm-08 off and on for over 35 year now, and the one deer I lost about 20 years ago, was because it was a rushed gut shot, and it still turns my stomach every time I think of it. I tracked it for a day and a half, and couldn't find it.

Now why Hornady praises the 7mm-08 instead of the 7mm PRC? no clue. But I wouldn't say the 7mm-08 is garbage. It was designed as a Silhouette Competition cartridge yes, but it is also a very effective hunting cartridge, when used correctly an within it's limitations

It is not a long range cartridge, but up to 500 or 600 yards depending on the load, it works great. The factory ammo is mostly junk, but for a reloader, it is a great cartridge.

A far as Hornady podcasts, I don't waste my time with them.

Regards

Luis

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
I can't bear to listen to these videos anymore. I went on a club hunt recently and had to sit around the campfire listening to people extolling the virtues of the 6.5 Creedmore, I can't stand it.

I've had a 7mm-08 for years and it's OK but overall nothing special. I'm sure here in NZ there are people that have taken Wapiti with a 223 but that doesn't make it an ideal cartridge for the job and neither is the 7mm-08. I've read Nathan's review on the 7mm-08 and I'd say it's spot on.

I regard the 7mm-08 as a 300 yard rifle, I know that people take animals much further out with this caliber and the 308 too but I'd prefer not to. I've got a 300 Win Mag for backup, I don't use it much but it's there if I need it.

Re: 7mm-08 garbage
In my industry, I take a lot of heat for speaking up. So be it. Facts, however, are just that..facts. In this case, I agree that the the cartridge in question has merits...PROVIDED it's limitations are respected. Even the Needmoor can do some things well...with the same provision.

IMHO, it always, or should always, come back to ethics. What we owe the game we are hunting. A quick, humane kill. Not optional.

For that reason, I personally believe in what I call "cartridge insurance." Same for the bullet employed. Pls forgive my shortened here..."Do not choose a cartridge for when everything goes right. Choose your cartridge for when everything goes wrong." To me, that's called insurance. That insurance gets us closer to meeting the ethics standard we should all aspire to.

Use what is required, not just what is comfortable. If it's uncomfortable, learn to manage it. Don't compromise on the cartridge. Your game animal deserves better.

Cheers & good hunting everyone.

Danny
