Vanguard Stock and Bedding

I recently picked up a 7mm RM Weatherby Vanguard with a B&C stock. The stock does not have a bedding block but has a couple of pillars. Does anybody have any advice on how to stiffen the forend? This is a foam-filled stock, and the forend is easily moved 6mm away from the barrel and has no upward pressure ( meant to be pressure bedded). My thoughts are to epoxy fiberglass from the action rails to the forend before bedding the whole thing. but I am open to suggestions

Hi Fraser. The Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance book has detailed discussion and photos on bedding Howas in Hogue stocks, which would also apply to your stock. If you’re thinking of full-length bedding the barrel, I think you’d have to bed the action at the same time. In other words, you can’t do it in 2 steps. But after you read the book, you’ll probably decide to bed the action and free-float the barrel. You can add a pressure point to the forend later, if necessary. There are a couple important tips in the book about how to maintain a height-reference at the tang, and taping the bottom of the recoil lug to avoid the potential problem of crumbs of bedding material falling into the lug recess area when reassembling the barreled action to the stock.

Hi Scott, thanks for your reply. I have the book you mentioned and I intend to bed the action with the barrel free floating. My problem is if I do this the forfend will flex and touch the barrel and this will be bad. There are no voids to fill on the stock so the question is how do I stiffen the forend to stop it flexing. I need to fix this before I bed the action.

Hi Fraser, if you intend to epoxy the forend back to the action, you will need to remove most or all of the foam, then lay your epoxy and whatever reinforcing you might like. Unfortunately, we do not have the Stabilizer in Oz at the moment, still working on importation but lockdowns have slowed things down. I think we are making some progress however.

Alternatively, it may be possible to obtain enough stiffness if you simply bed out into the barrel channel by say 1.5". But again, it pays to dig down into the foam within the start of the barrel channel. Sometimes, this alone is enough to minimize the effects of flexing in the old B&C stocks. Do note that these old stocks will sometimes / eventually crack all over. They are not as tough as their modern counterparts. A replacement B&C (Nosler M48 rifle shape) would be the ultimate fix, but may be impossible to find in your location at this time.

Re: Vanguard Stock and Bedding
I’d try front and rear bedding of the action, sand out a generous barrel channel (if needed), and adopt a shooting style that minimizes forend flex. I.e., no bipod, don’t rest the forend tip on anything, hold on to it about midway, and use a sling hold that exerts pressure backwards into your shoulder, not laterally.

Re: Vanguard Stock and Bedding
Hi Nathan, Thanks for the insight. I am guessing that you just grind out the foam?
I have some marine grade Expoy ( west systems 105) that I can use to fill the stock, I am hoping it will work like your stock stabilizer - have used that in the past.
Getting a new stock would fix the problem, but not easy or quick at the moment

Fraser these stocks really aren't worth the time and effort. They just don't last as Nathan has said, the foam just breaks down with time.

A better and easier option for you may be a Boyd's Classic from Cleavers or the Barn. Fit some pillars and bed it, job done.

Re: Vanguard Stock and Bedding
I wish they were $349, in AUS peso's they are more than double that price if you can get one shipped.
Thanks for all your assistance. At this point, I have nothing to lose by bedding the action and seeing how it shoots. If it falls apart, then I will have to make a new plan.
