Bedding a Barloc?

I’m planning to add a Barloc to one of my rifles and wondered if anyone here had seen or bedded a rifle so equipped. Curious as to whether to plan on bedding under the Barloc onto the knox or leave it short. I suppose I can always do so and sand it down it if doesn’t work.

I’ve gotta sand/grind out the existing bedding on this rifle anyway because the job was botched the first time around. Just hoping to avoid chasing my tail on the second (or spending a princely sum to have it done badly).

A reference for those who may not be familiar:

Why? Because $600 into a spare barrel versus thousands into a second rifle has enough appeal to test the concept.

Why now? Because I'm in the process of trying to fix a botched bedding job anyhow.

This current debacle makes me wish I were in Nathan's neck of the woods. At the end of the day, I just want a damn rifle that shoots... that's proving an immensely frustrating proposition.

Hi David. If I understand you right, the Barloc device allows you to build a poor-man’s Blaser, of sorts. I assume you’ve got Nathan’s books. If not, then download a copy of The Practical Guide to Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance. Bedding the Knox can 1) take some stress off the action by providing support for a barrel-heavy rifle, and 2) dampen harmonics somewhat. He also covers what to do with existing Knox bedding after barrel replacement, which may be applicable to your question.

Re: Bedding a Barloc?
Scott,

The book series adorns the shelf opposite me. It's nice to reflect on a simpler time when I was filled with the notion that I might be able to knock a rifle together and not be rubbish at it. Heh.

A poor man's Blaser is about right. The key difference being that it leaves the action and recoil lug unmolested and of a standard configuration. That said, it's a collar sitting round the barrel and I've no real idea what the impacts of bedding that would be. I suppose I can guinea pig it. The rifle certainly can't shoot any worse than it did.

I bought the action for the current rifle without considering the full ramifications thereof. It's got a stubby little tang on it. The stock was fitted with massive aluminum doughnuts at the top. The tang doesn't even clear the doughnut. It is nigh impossible to set a height reference at the rear. That is probably why, despite being bedded, the action say almost entirely on the pillars. Further to this, the blunt end of the tang broke/hammered out the bedding behind the tang.

I spent today hogging/grinding out the old, very expensive, bedding. I probably accidentally ground out a bunch of fiberglass/fill in the process. At worst, I've wrecked the stock. It's a Manner's CS-2 w/ CF shell... so, it'll be emotional for me if that's what I've done. Hopefully, I've simply set myself up for a very ugly, but functional, second bedding job.

Honestly, the only idea I like less than bedding it myself, is spending another exorbitant sum to have a gun smith f@ck it up again. If this weren't a rifle I put together for my son foremost... I like shooting a lot more than I like arts and crafts... and I generally only have time for one or the other. I used to question why people spent vast sums on a rifle. I get it now. Had I done so a couple years ago I would today have both more money and a functional rifle.

Why don’t you install the Barloc on the action, take pictures of it and the stock, and email them to Nathan, including the lengths and muzzle diameters of the barrels. My guess he would advise you not to bed the Knox, since you plan to swap barrels (depending on the quarry).

Re: Bedding a Barloc?
Plot Twist: I corresponded with Manners and I'm going to send them the stock for the installation of their mini-chassis system. I could obviously still bed that later if I so choose. Will test first "as-is." Excited to try to the MCS-DBM mini-chassis because it should obviate fiddling with the weird stumpy tang, huge aluminum disc/pillars and such.

I would like to be a fly on the wall when they unwrap the box... "What the hell happened to this stock? Good Lord above... what a mess..."

I suppose I can hold onto the Hawkins bottom metal for a "rainy day" build at some later point. I figured with the mass coming out of the stock and the bottom metal replacement, it'll probably be close to weight neutral. It's a 9.5 lb rifle, all in, but carries really nicely with a 20 inch barrel.

This clearly marks me as a heathen... and I'm mostly "OK" with that.
