Mystery Bullet

Thought I'd pop in here and see if anyone had a guess as to how this happened...

The context is a chipboard target backed by a very large tree stump, this bullet fragment found ones foot shy of the target's base. No metal fasteners used in mounting the target.

Hi Kevin, its hard to tell with just the one photo and short description. It looks like an M193 projectile (5.56 / 55gr). The chip board may have been enough to cause the projectile to yaw. The projectile possibly exited the board in a state of instability, hit the stump (with little energy), then came back to the board.
