mark korteAny body ever hear of a 9.9 Mauser? I saw it referenced in a pretty historically accurate novel about Africa. I Googled it, but couldn't find anything...reference in novel was in regards to a warden shooting a problem elephant. |

JOHN HAYSRe: 9.9 mauserHi Mark, What African-themed novel are you reading? I grew up reading hard-boiled detective stories, but cringed when the bad guy menacingly flicks off the safety on his Colt or Webley revolver. Even at age nine I hated bone-headed inaccuracies in my crime-fantasy stories. |

mark korteRe: 9.9 mauserJohn - Its a novel called "A Story Like The Wind" by a South African native named Laurens van der Post. He seems the real deal - African native, served with the British and was a Japanese POW in WW2, traveled extensively in the Kalahari among the Bushmen, wrote non-fiction books about Bushmen culture in which he references shooting meat. Thus I was sort amazed he would reference a rifle caliber that doesn't seem to exist. Maybe the type setter saw "98 Mauser" and it came out as "9.9 Mauser". If so it was done more than once. |

Kenneth JohnsonRe: 9.9 mauserMark - I have never heard of a 9.9mm; however, if you use the conversion factor (9.9 divided by 25.4) into inches you get .3897... In other words, it might be the "author's" description of a .40 caliber (or European "bore) rifle he used or saw used. The cartridge being referred to as a "Mauser" would give it a German heritage, but not one I've ever heard of as a reference. Ken |

Warwick MarflittRe: 9.9 mauserI think the Author just made it up on the fly at 2am drinking their 10th cup of coffee. Does it really matter? 😇😇😇 |

mark korteRe: 9.9 mauserWarwick - seems a little light for a warden to be carrying for rogue elephants, even with the popular legends of the 7x57 for potting elephants. Anyway, he was carrying a rifle. But as you say and in the end - "who cares?" I just figured this was the place to cast the widest net on info. If it doesn't exist you can't catch it. |
