300 WinMag vs. 300 Norma Mag or 300 RUM?

Well All.

I'm looking at an Elk hunt for next fall, and thoughts have turned to a rifle & cartridge appropriate to the task. Meaning Western Elk, Montana/Colorado/New Mexico, with a maximum range of less than 1000 yards, but probably 700-800 yards as the higher end. I've done a fair bit of shooting with the 6.5 Creedmore at ranges up to 1000 yards, but it's not an appropriate choice for this hunt. Rifle may, or may not be custom, with a Remington 700 action, exact barrel and length to be determined but no lighter than the Sendero profile.

Initially, I was thinking the 300 WinMag as it's well proven, with plenty of factory ammo, though I do plan on hand loading to optimize with the heavier and higher B/C bullets. Recently I've also had some conversations with some other local folks who are fans of the 300 Norma Mag, which also seems good in terms of ballistics, but possibly over gunned for what I'm looking at. Various 300 RUM rifles seem to be available in my area, but I'm more concerned about the "barrel burner" aspects of that cartridge, and of course I do expect to spend significant time at the range and in practice before any Elk hunt.

Nathan, having seen your more recent newsletter about the new reamers, including the 300 WinMag this might also be a good reason so stay with that one.

So, really I'm looking for thoughts or general input on this from the group.

Thanks in advance,

Randall

The new Hornady 300 PRC cartridge might be worth a look too. Essentially a standardized .30-375 Ruger optimized for the new long range bullets.

First time Ive heard of 300 PRC but always thought .30 Nosler looked like a good in between/balanced design? Definitely going to be interesting to see what these Fosterised reamers bring to the table but betting it will be worth while waiting for.

I hadn't actually thought about the 300 PRC to be honest. I think I need to take a look at the case capacities of all of those, and maybe run some theoretical numbers for MV.

But yes, I think waiting for the new reamers will be at the top of the to-do list.

Hi Randall, I won't go into which is best, each have various strengths, the Norma mag is certainly a hot number, excellent reach. Instead I will try to answer your question about the new reamers, just briefly.

The Win Mag had some flaws to begin with. These combined with growing OAL/s meant that it was a bit out of shape with modern pills. Actually it is up around 95mm or 3.74" in some combos so its too long for just about all mag boxes. Therefore, while tidying up other poor dimensions, we have shortened the OAL but made sure that you will not lose velocity (or experience high pressure with Superformance ammo - the main concern). The math for this was not so easy but we are near the finish line now. The reamer is quite different to others. Its not just a 'match' reamer. Not at all, it has plenty of pressure relief for power development.

Length is an ongoing issue. It has an effect on everything, even the new stuff like the .30 Nolser has a very generic throat design and can suffer the same ranges in tolerances seen with others.

You probably won't have to wait too much longer for this reamer so if you want a non barrel burner, you can select this with confidence. It should have the wow factor you are looking for. Fast yet accurate.

Nathan,

Many thanks for that, and I'll be looking forward to seeing the new reamers.
