.308 twist

Hi Nathan,

I'm having a .308 built on a Remington action for hunting and would like to use bullets in the 150gr-180gr weight range, most likely 150gr, 155gr and 168gr (sst and a-max). Which barrel twist do you think would be best for the job 1-11'' or 1-12''
The barrel will be a pac-nor finished at 24''
I will be shooting Roe and fallow deer out to 500yds

Thanks
Robert

Re: .308 twist
Hi Robert, I have been finding that the 1:11 twist rate is excellent for the .308 Win. Tikka use this twist rate in their .308 rifles and across the board, accuracy has been excellent along with great flexibility regarding bullet weights. Remington also use this twist in the 5R rifles (1:11.25) and I have been seeing accuracy to the order of .25 to .3 MOA.

It really is a good, versatile twist rate. I will be sticking with this twist rate myself from now on since True-Flite have adopted a 1:11 button.

Re: .308 twist
Hey just wondering what the effect of a 1:10 rate is? The Howa I have purchased is 1:10. It's the factory barrel and i plan on working it to get the best from it but cannot do anything about the twist rate. It's a 24" heavy barrel if that helps make an informed decision.

Cheers lads.

Yours will do just fine Andrew. Load workups will be the key to finding what you want for targets and hunting with it. Here is a link to an article you may find of interest:

Re: .308 twist
Hi Andrew, the twist will be fine for all bullet weights at these speeds.

As an aside for all, lately I have been mapping my 11 twist True-Flite barreled .308 with a range of loads up to the 225gr ELD-M. The rifle and mag length cope with all loads, producing one hole groups and all have the same 3" POI at 100 yards as my regular 168gr load. The only load that will not work at mag length is the 225gr which I have seated to 73mm. I could easily remove the tip to make it fit the mag if need be, without losing a great deal in the way of BC. In any case, it has been fun to map the 195gr TMK and the 200gr ELD-X at 2470fps, the 208gr ELD-M at 2370fps and 225gr ELD-M at 2270fps in the one rifle. The .308 is such a doddle to work with, requiring very little load development after initial base line work, especially in the accurate True-Flite barrel. I believe there is also more room to play with the 225gr which boasts greater potential than most .338 federal load combos. Food for thought.
