Mauser G29/40 action (660)

I was wondering if anyone has any experience/insight on whether these actions are any good. I came across a rifle for sale that was advertised as a Mauser, date stamp on the top of the receiver is 1940. The side rail is stamped G29/40. After doing some research, I found that these are Polish model 29 actions that were seized by Germany at the Radom factory when they invaded Poland. They then sent the actions to Steyr to be put to use for the German army, hence the 660 code, which was the Steyr factory identification number.

All the info that I can find says that they are a clone of the Kar98, but there is one obvious difference. The rear ring of the receiver is very small and thin, not allowing a scope to be mounted to it. All of the examples of scopes that I have found online show the optic to be mounted on the front receiver ring and the beginning of the barrel, with the scope then set back and kind of hanging out over the action.

Just to be clear, the rifle I found has been sporterized and rebarreled to 30-06. But it has never been fitted with optics and is currently missing the rear portion of the open sights. As it is, it really cannot be aimed at a target. I like the look of it, it’s something different and neat.

One big question is, is this optic mounting system any good? It seems like the scope is hanging so far back that it would be easy to get bumped around. For pictures, you can google “Mauser 660 with scope” to see what I am talking about. I don’t really want to spend the money right now, but I find it very interesting, and could save it for a future project. Any observations or thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks,
Trace

Re: Mauser G29/40 action (660)
Hi Trace, its always hard to say with regards to metallurgy and such.

Regarding the rear bridge, it only has to be as thick as the diameter of the screw tapped into it. Ask the seller if he might be kind enough to put a caliper over the rear of the receiver. He may be kind enough to do so.

Thanks Nathan,

I will see how it measures. It doesn’t sound like the seller is going to come off the price any, and for what he wants I think I could put my money to better use elsewhere. I like that the rifle is somewhat unique, but I don’t want to sink money into it if I’m not certain that I can achieve the outcome I’m looking for.

Thanks,
Trace
