Crown damage to a 308W Advice please...

Hi there everybody, this is my first post....

I picked up yesterday a new Remington M700 308W and arrived home to notice a small round dent in the crown. It is the size of a pin head and just slightly back from the bore.
I contacted the dealer who said they would replace or repair it if I wanted. But that it wouldn't harm the rifle's accuracy?

From what I read this is not true?

I am only just back into the sport and would appreciate any advice.

I have a good photo of it but can't figure our how to upload onto the forum.

Thank you in advance

Hi Michel, the dent won't effect accuracy at this stage but I would still get it remedied.

Pressure at the muzzle is still very great and if the steel at the muzzle is weakened, it can swage away from the path of the bullet. The muzzle needs to be re-cut, not polished. The lightest of cuts will do and the shape of the cut does not need to be the same recurve, it can be a stepped target crown. So definitely get it sorted.

Glad you enjoyed the book, have a great Easter.

Hope that helps.

Michel, I have put up a thread about posting photos in the main index. Hope it helps.

One last thing, after the muzzle is recrowned, it will be blued with touch up blue which will wear off easily. Do not worry about this. All that you need to remember is to apply a small amount of grease about the muzzle prior to storage. Remove any surplus grease near the chamfer of the muzzle prior to shooting again.
