22 Barrel Life

Hi all,

Has anyone got experience with replacing 22LR barrels?

I've fired close to 2000rds through mine but it seems to perform rather well still.

Is there a limit or is the lower velocity and softer projectile combination conducive to a longer barrel life?

Cheers :)

Re: 22 Barrel Life
Clean them once in a blue moon, shoot them a lot but use good ammo, never let them rust inside or out.

I have one Cooey .22LR that must have had 6 or 7 thousand rounds through it between my dan, brothers and sister...and my grandchildren have been using it a lot. It got a lot of care over the 60 plus years but will still take a chicken's head out in the bush easy enough.

One of my Anshutz .22LR rifles has had two and a half cases of 5000 rounds per case of Lapua TenX ammo shot through it and it still shoots bug hole groups.

Re: 22 Barrel Life
Back when I shot small bore prone and position competition I bought my Eley match ammo from the local distributor, Art Cook. Art had won Olimpic medals in smalbore and had a lifetime experience with highly accurate .22 LR rifles. Art said he NEVER cleaned the bore of his target rifles. He said more smallbore barrels are ruined for top accuracy by cleaning than by shooting. Since those days, I've become aware of the problem with carbon and lead "ring" build-up just ahead of the chamber. I personally always gave my rifles a gentle cleaning, patches only, with a product called TSI - 301. It is a water clear liquid that cleans and lubricates the bore. I stored my .22 match rifles with a thin film of this in the bore and ran one or two dry patches out before the next match. I believe this product was introduced to me by Neil Johnson who bedded my rifles and many other .22 match rifles. I think Neil was associated with the US Olimpic training center in Colorado. Sorry for the long winded reply. -Ed
