Howa 1500 Varmint 300 Win mag

I have been considering the purchase of a Howa 1500 Varmint 300 Win mag. I recently helped a friend of mine get a Howa 308 up and running and was pleasantly surprised with the construction and performance. Does anyone here have any experience with this particular model? It comes in the Hogue stock ( I have a fair bit of experience bedding these bastards). My concerns, the Varmint 24" barrel may be a real bugger to lug around when mated to to rather light hogue? I don't mind heavy as such, my Rem700 in a hogue is on the heavy side too. Just wondering if the stock is up to the recoil... even after bedding and stabilizing. Putting it in a Boyds a better option? or a B&C?
At $650 to $700 the rifle seems like an absolute bargain. I would appreciate any thoughts you guys might have.

PS I am on a budget, hence the interest. Would love a Sendero...

P.S, I prefer the 300 Win brass though l do work it over before use, neck turning, primer uniform etc.

Hi Mike, looks like Marty has covered your questions well.

Just to add, the current Win Brass has been showing some issues. Its a bit of a gamble just now in .300WM. If you want to try Win then go for it, but you may need to buy a concentricity gauge so that you can check concentricity during load work (actually very useful regardless of which brass you buy) For now, if you can, try to source Hornady. S&B is a bit soft for full experimentation.

Regarding the Zee rings. Best practice is to set your torque during the initial set up, then reset the following morning. I do find that during the initial set up, the slots (cross screw location) can be nonyielding, but after leaving over night, the bottom of the ring yields and pulls in, but this leaves the cross screw loose. A retighten in the morning before you go to the range fixes this. I have not had any further problems thereafter. However once they come in, they stay in, not the best if you want a relatively quick detach system. Not sure if these are the same issues Marty is talking about having. Otherwise, I have really given my Burris rings hell and the optics have stayed put over the years. Very important to use this type of ring on the likes of the CZ rifles if at all possible due to potentially dicky receiver machining. That or lap traditional rings. Your rig will be a bit different with its one piece rail.

No cross bolt issues just 25mm scopes turning in the rings (only on my own rifles not others l have set up).

Using canted or zero inserts & all set with calibrated torque driver.
First tried new inserts in my 308w at 20 inch-pounds....bust & then resetting all four screws increasing torque by 5 inch pounds. No screws had lost torque on either setting. Only fix was a smear of bearing Loctite on mating surfaces and small drop of epoxy on outside.

Had no problems with the 30mm Sig Zees and have put it down to the single retaining screws on the 25mm sets. Only an assumption but sick of messing around with it so going to these sets with more retaining screws.

Should add none of these 3 rifles are high recoiling which only adds the conundrum!
