Olivier ROUVIEREDear Nathan communityNorma is claiming that their new ODIN bullet possesses "all the positive properties of lead - without the lead. The best expansion window on the market due to bullet construction and NAFT Precision Coating." Can we believe it and expect full expansion and/or partial fragmentation at 1800fps? did anybody test it? or this is just marketing? Kind regards Olivier |

Nathan FosterRe: Norma ODIN - Allfather of lead-free hunting bulletHi Olivier, must be truth time huh.As you will be aware, I worked a brief contract for Norma. A manager had contacted me to ask if I would write technical information for the Norma academy section of the website, to help educate hunters. During the initial contact emails, I made my stance clear, in that I believed bullet makers were equally in need of education, not simply a case of educating the ignorant masses. I wrote about our experiences with Norma ammo here in NZ in the old days when everybody (Both Norma and customers) were focused on exploration such as the development of the Vulcan, the wonder, the joy of discovery, the focus on performance - not marketing or ticking eco boxes. The manager was delighted and sent an email to request that I write my articles for Norma Academy. Following this, I would have the opportunity to work with Norma staff. The article was sent, the invoice paid promptly. If you read the article, you can likely sense my enthusiasm regarding the direction I thought we were heading in (honesty / values). The article was a success and so I waited for the next phase. Several weeks later the manager wrote to me to say that upper management did not wish to utilize my services and that the current focus would be toward developing mono projectiles, gel testing and video marketing. It was a gut punch, but I appreciated the honesty from this manager who had been kind and honest with me. We have to face the fact that many bullet / ammo makers are now under the umbrella of giant corporates (and government organizations) who make their money, not from hunters, but from war, long ugly protracted wars. We must have the courage and honesty to face this. Below this level (regarding ammo makers) you have the eco box ticking with hunters taking third place. Regarding new mono designs (non weight shedding types), anyone who has read my book set will understand that expansion is only a part of the terminal ballistics equation. Heck, I even went over this in the Norma academy articles. We live in an age of information which has both its pros and cons. The downside is that it is all too easy to market ideas via websites and social media. We have to this end unfortunately replaced facts with popular (group) thinking. On the other hand, if we exercise discipline and critical thinking, we can use the same resources to push back on basically bad science. Things like this may take time but is in our best interests to do so, if not for ourselves then for the following generation. |

Olivier ROUVIERERe: Norma ODIN - Allfather of lead-free hunting bulletThank you again, Nathan, for your complete transparency. Human beings are like that; they can't help but follow collective trends and fashions, even if they may seem counterproductive... As you know, I have finished a book on bullets, calibers, and species of big game to hunt around the world, which will be published in September 2026, first in French, my mother tongue, and which draws in part on your expertise. I like to organize and classify things, and ODIN will be cataloged in the monolithic expanding bullets category, like the others, until proven otherwise.Best regards |
