Hey everyone, just starting to reload the 162 grain ELDM for a Tikka T 3X, I purchased. ( Rem 7mm08) I am trying to establish the absolute Max COAL ie to the lands. further testing will be required ( need to buy a few things) however using the lock tite in the fired case method has indicated that my total is 2.952' or 75 mm.. Does this sound about right? to be honest I thought it would be slightly longer?.. Either way, my understanding is that the 7mm 08 requires a decent amount of jump in order to function well. How much is sensible to start with. ? I do understand the idea of seating for control/concentricity and also mag length ( I am about a millimetre over) but otherwise temporarily stumped..

Hi Michael, 75mm is fine, about normal.

The length of this chamber helps provide some room for gas expansion / power development, but that does not mean that you have to seat deep in the case. The chamber has room for gas expansion whether you seat into the case or up against the lands.

Regarding load development pressure. Seating deep in the case tends to raise pressure, seating out reduces pressure. But as you get very close to the lands (i.e. .2mm), pressure begins to rise again.

You can go two ways with this. The first is to seat to mag length and chances are it will go very well as it is not going to be producing extremely high velocities / harmonics.

The second option is to experiment close to the lands (.010" / .2mm jump) and if this proves to be optimal, employ a .270 Win mag box and alter the bolt stop. Fortunately, at 74.8mm, you will still have plenty of bullet length in the case neck.

Its a good rifle cartridge combo and will hopefully be enjoyable to experiment with and use no matter which method you decide to employ.

Hope that helps. All the best.

Thanks Nathan, I backed off 2 mill ( 80 thou) so 2.875 ' and made a ladder with 2208. rifle has M+ Mag on it and a 20 inch barrel. ( it's really just a shortish hack rifle). thought this would be a logical plan. Kinda wanted to load something and shoot tommorow as work keeps on taking me away from home for weeks at a time. Managed to pull .6 MOA with Norma Whitetail when I first fired it. Trying to avoid going too hot with this brass/bullet combo.

Thanks again
