In the first book of our series, we studied the fundamentals of rifle design, rifle accuracy and the pitfalls and traps that can befall us. This first book served as our critical knowledge platform for selecting an accurate rifle and components while also acting as a buyer beware. The second book in this series helped us select a suitable cartridge chambering for our needs.
In this third book of our series, it is time to get our hands dirty. Now that we have selected a rifle, we can commence rifle accurizing. Explanations are left to the first book as we put all that we have learned into practice, fine tuning the rifle into a highly accurate tool.
You will not find the information within this book elsewhere, The Practical Guide To Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance being a stand alone book offering unique- but as its name suggests, highly practical information. Each section is laid out step by step with summary tables to help the reader achieve the goal of obtaining an accurate rifle that will remain reliable in the field.
Like the first and second books in this series, The Practical Guide To Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance is suitable for people of all backgrounds. However, it is advisable that our first book is read as a means to lay a strong foundation before embarking on manual projects. With this rudimentary understanding, the third book in our series can be utilized by both novice and experienced shooters. Both books remove the headache from the rifle accuracy game and give you, the reader, the tools to obtain a truly accurate and reliable rifle.
The Practical Guide To Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance is one of the best investments you will ever make when entering into the field of long range hunting or precision shooting. It is filled with detailed photos and descriptions - with over 300 pages packed full of helpful information. No stone is left unturned and no information is held back. Whether read cover to cover or used as reference guide to return to again and again, Nathan gives his entire body of experience to the reader in his usual caring, supportive and highly readable manner.
This book is a must-read for:
Beginners (in conjunction with book 1)
Tactical research organizations
Just wanted to say that although I have been a armourer in the British Army for 20 years, your books have opened my eyes to long range hunting and rifle accuracy outside of military teaching. It has become blatantly apparent that military thinking is years behind in both technical and user training. I am actively encouraging armourers and users to read your books and check out your website.
If I ever make it to NZ for a hunting trip I will deffo be knocking on your door.
Thanks again (Confidential- NF).

Here is a small preview of what is in the book.
1. Preliminary rifle set up
How to set up a new, custom or second hand rifle for preliminary testing including individual set up methods to suit individual rifle designs. Topics include but are not limited to- how to inspect the bore, how to inspect and lap the locking lugs, trigger alterations and modifications, mounting optics, traps to watch for during rifle assembly and also methods to implement temporary bedding for preliminary rifle testing. This section alone is critical and for example, can mean the difference between an accurate off the shelf Tikka T3 rifle and one that shoots poorly.
2. Preliminary test shooting and barrel break in
This section begins with bore fundamentals. Once this information is fully understood, the reader is then able to move onto appropriate barrel break in procedures. This is not the normal generic “one answer for all rifles”. You will very quickly gain the skills to assess the bore of your rifle and make your own decisions as to which steps of the book you will then follow. Topics include tools for breaking in a rifle barrel, hand lapping methods, test shooting procedures, assessing rifle accuracy, fire lapping, barrel stress and double grouping, action flaws and other topics. Again, each section is broken down into steps enabling the reader to test the rifle and make accurate assessments.
3. Rifle bedding in depth
This section goes into rifle bedding in great detail. Whether you are a DIY operator or professional user, the bedding section of this book is extremely useful. While we provide basic bedding instructions and videos on the Terminal Ballistics Research website, it has been difficult to make a full length document that won’t lose the reader. In the Practical Guide, bedding is covered in immense detail, yet along with this, summary tables are provided to act as check lists throughout the process. This provides the reader with a permanent expandable / summerized format. Topics include pillar bedding (both fundamentals and application), mindset (a section to help sooth the nerves for those new to bedding), plastic stock stabilizing, rifle bedding, rework, extra tips for military bolt action rifles and rifle reassembly procedures.
4. Ongoing maintenance
Part 2 of The Practical Guide To Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance covers critical ongoing maintenance and can mean the difference between a rifle that lasts a lifetime versus one that loses accuracy within days or weeks. Topics include field care of the bore, bore cleaning, throat polishing procedures, bolt cleaning procedures and rifle storage. Following this, the maintenance section covers exterior care including care of wood and laminate stocks, painted stocks, rifle painting, suppressor care, muzzle brake care and care of optics. Again, each aspect of the maintenance section is taken step by step along with summary tables to help the reader standardize maintenance procedures into basic routines.
Here’s How the Book Has Helped Some Other Readers
I have been zealously reading the text of the "Practical Guide" with great interest. Many gaps in too many topics are being filled. I think you have a winner here!
Well, back to reading….
Thanks, Langton, USA.
After reading this book you will find yourself equipped with the information necessary to set about accurizing your rifle in a DIY environment. If your current rifle isn’t performing to an adequate standard then you will have clear steps to either rectify problems or ascertain whether parts (eg barrel) replacement is required. Gunsmiths can use this book as a research tool, a checklist during accurizing work and also as a means to improve bedding skills. It can also be used as a great tool to assist in the training of a new apprentice.
The maintenance section of this book has crucial information for long term care of the rifle, helping to maximize barrel life while preventing corrosion. Sub sections of this book also deal with self loading rifle and lever action rifle care.
The Practical Guide To Bolt Action Rifle Accurizing and Maintenance is a must read for anyone seriously interested in the care of rifles.
If you are teetering between wanting to learn more - but don’t know if you really want to obtain a PhD on the subject of rifles, you will find this book to be a great asset. Both this book and the first in the series are money savers. The first book can serve as a buyer beware (for both ordinary hunting rifles and long range rifles) while this third book in the series can be used for basic setup and cleaning procedures to help preserve your rifle. As you build more confidence, you may wish to have a go at some of the more advanced and complex steps towards full accuracy enhancement.
