Re: Just checking in on forum members
Thanks for the post. I was beginning to think I'd been kicked out of the forum. Some underlying feeling of guilt? Possibly. Returned from a 45 day driving tour of Argentina. Outstanding area. From Buenos Aires up to the falls in the north over to Cordoba and onto Mendoza then back to the coast.

Last evening in Argentina the Hotel Canning and Plaza was closed by the police due to the virus. Passport was checked and had I entered after March 01 no hotel room would be allowed. Either leave the country or go into quarantine. EZEIZA terminal was almost a ghost town March 18. Flew into Santiago for a layover and ALL passengers were checked for fever and questioned prior to entering the terminal. Fly into Toronto and no medical teams to meet the flight. Even though the dip stick, aka PM, states publicly that billions of dollars are being spent to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Argentina is far ahead in lifestyle and general freedoms that the Canadian democracy is more like a dictatorship with the pin heads in Ottawa.

OKAY. Pardon. I'll get off my soap box. Last year lived in BA for 42 days touring around on subways. Just living. Possibly time for a change.

Re: Just checking in on forum members
My wife and I are, as of 8:00pm last night, in self-isolation. We struggled with whether or not this should be "made public". The points for and against sharing this are all valid. But in the end, we decided that in the interest of the general population and their right to know about the safety of their health, that this should not be kept to ourselves.

We are not sick, we show no signs or symptoms, but we had close contact with a person who is still awaiting test results. Unfortunately, with a situation like the global pandemic, not enough is known about transmission, so the advice to keep contact to null is sound.

Further to this, as you may or may not be aware, my wife and I have been working with Nathan for distribution of his MatchGrade products in North America, under the name of Nechako Distributors. I would like to take this opportunity to assure our recent customers that their orders were filled and shipped previous to any contact with the above mentioned party. (The last order was filled and shipped 3 days prior to contact.)

As well, we think that suspending operations for the two week isolation period would be prudent.

Panic is not the answer. Follow protocols set about by your local health care provider.

You all stay healthy.

Don't panic , but do plan and plan ahead.

I'm working in London and the government here have let this run, there were 2 flights a week landing in London from Wuhan city for 5 weeks.

Seems the thinking was that this would only kill the old and political and business leaders were content to pay that price.

When the Virus affected the markets on Monday the 9th and again on the 11th it forced them to make statements designed to protect the financial markets but not people. They sold bullshit and delayed, if a situation is changing exponentially, you can't delay, move left right up or down but do not delay.

They delayed.

This monday the 16th Imperial college London made public there numbers which showed that 250,000 would die with the advice only policies in place.

Now people are realising that maybe the derivitives or futures markets aren't really that important and that people have some value, even if they've stopped working.

Now London is entering the Shit Show phase

SARS and MERS were both stopped.

This was left run because that aws seen as the cheapest option, yet again the masters of the universe got their sums wrong.

But we will pick up the tab, they learned that much from the GFC

Sounds like you had a good holiday Frank, any hunting along the way or just sight seeing?

Thank you for your honesty paul and reassuring customers, you managing to keep yourself busy?
I'm stuck with not wanting to spend money as I'm worried bit being self employed, but I think I should get stuff I need like roof paint to catch up on all the jobs around home I don't normally have time to do if I end up well but in self isolation.

I'll try not to get into politics on this post, there will be wrong and right decisions made and lot of things learnt, I'm just glad I'm not the one having to make the decisions.
The financial stability will always be a concern.
I got one friend that's a domestic pilot, another friend took redundancy in a restructuring exercise end of last year thinking it would be nice to spend sometime with his family and is now looking for a new job.
Guy at the range was telling me the receptionist from his wife's gym left to become a travel agent a month ago only managed 1 week before becoming unemployed.
The stress might mean they get hit by the virus even harder then they normally would.

I'm meant to be doing a 9 day helicopter fly in trip in early April, not sure I want to be away from the family that long at the moment.
Also coming through that some helicopter companies are canceling trips as they can't guarantee they'll be able to fly people back out.
Te urewera's has been shut by the iwi that own it by sounds of it to protect their food source.

Argentina was another scouting mission. They have locked down the country fining people that appear in parks. Dog walkers have limited outside time available.
I've repaired two guitars that were languishing in a corner. Opened up a box with sheet music and on top was "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" Hmm.

"The Neighbor" came out to tell me "You can't be outside". I laughed and stated "Wrong. I can come and go as I please as long as I avoid folks like you" The gossip mill will be churning. Never was politically correct. Some hard wiring that can not be reprogrammed. Haha!

I have unfortunately contracted orange penis syndrome as a result of being in isolation with nothing but corn snacks and pornos for several days.

Just kidding.

All good here thanks. Steph and I are writing (The Door). I have also been shooting a good deal, keeping my eye in, taking time to enjoy each moment. Range therapy is always good, the mind forced into an alpha state, rate of breathing slowed etc.

I read somewhere that toothpaste, a mild abrasive, will get that off, but in severe cases, an 8-to-1 mix of toothpaste and aluminum oxide may be necessary.

I said 1 1/2 months ago too shut the boarders as we'd only loose some money! Now were going to loose lives and money...... Old pensioners weak and poor will suffer the most..... one's who, the Rich, selfish, middle class call a Drain on society!
Here's my go to song. Patti Smith singing. Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rains a gonna fall" Watch the rich jewel encrusted audience squirm in there seats as the magnitude of the words sink in.......

Re: Just checking in on forum members
The downsides of this pandemic are obvious, critical, and unavoidable so I won't rehash them. Here are the Mayfield family silver linings.

We spent four days at a lakeside place and felt zero pressure to get out and visit people.

I am taking the time to read Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking, and Drying Wood the Scandinavian Way by Lars Mytting. Don't let the title fool you - fascinating book.

My wife has gained a new appreciation for her husband's introversion as it has allowed me to stay calm and level in the void of social interaction that is uncomfortable to her. Also, I have a treasure trove of things to do outdoors that don't involve groups of people. She sees a new value in these things.

I may finish the oak dining table that I've been building for my brother in law.

There are some (hopefully) productive lessons in all this for my children about what things are necessary and what are not.

My work continues but, as with my children and their routines, there may be some lessons in all this for me about what things are necessary and what are not.

Be safe and be well. This too shall pass.

Now there's a new spin. So, Joshua, to take it a little further, when all this is done, do you think the majority of the population will be introverts (normal)?

Re: Just checking in on forum members
Paul, if only it could be so. I don't know if you can convert an honest to goodness extrovert. We should try though.

To be serious though, I think it'll be a mixed bag. Some will be so traumatized by the change to their routine, or the loss of a business, or (worst case) the loss of a loved one that making sure this never happens again will be the most important thing in the world for them. Some will just figure the world's a weird place and crazy stuff will happen sometimes and go back to normal. Some, I hope, will rediscover the value of time spent alone or at least with your inner circle and cling to that moving forward regardless of how much the world resembles what it did before.

Marriage has taught me that my wife didn't choose whether to be invigorated and fed more by social activity or by solitude. She was hardwired to draw a positive charge from healthy social interaction. I was hardwired to be refreshed by silence and solitude. I can enjoy social activity and she can enjoy solitary time (in moderation) but we need different things to get us to our most healthy state. Learning what the other needs and learning to be a positive part of it has been, and continues to be, part of the fun. I've gained a lot of admiration for how she navigates settings that just make me want to be somewhere else. I hope she sees some good in how I handle solitary endeavors. Being still semi-idealistic, we hope to help our kids know how to navigate all of it.

Re: Just checking in on forum members
Well after suffering a detached retina in my right eye, the one I use to look through my rifle scope, I've been two months recovering. Frightening really, I noticed the sight in that eye wasn't quite right one evening, went to the opticians the next day, they sent me to hospital on the same day and by the end of the day I'd lost the sight in that eye.

I underwent surgery a couple of days later and after six weeks I could see through my rifle scope again. Through all of this I was determined to get better for the roar and the doctor has just told me that this is OK, just in time for Jacinda to just about cancel the roar. There may be good reason for the lock down but but after being around the house for two months I'm completely gutted.

A stressful couple of months, I was at one stage thinking that I was going to have to start shooting left handed. Nealy everyone I know is stocking up with booze and preparing to stay home, I suppose I'll just have to join them.

Ironic isn't it, New Zealand is probably about to have the biggest booze up in its history and Jacinda Ardern and her government are going to pay for it. I've thought about sneaking out for a hunt but decided it would be selfish and unfair on others.

For those of you who may find the self-isolation boring and you're sick of having no fun, I suggest an alternative. Watch YouTube clip of Howard Beale (actor Peter Finch) in the movie "Network" having a rant and do likewise. "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore."

Re: Just checking in on forum members
Yep, from a work perspective its not good for Kellie & I. We work from home together, & seeing as we need to get to vacant sites to do field work (geotech testing & soil based stuff for houses), we wont be able to work even though we work together (in isolation) from home & use our camper van as a mobile (isolated) office.

Inside a week we'll be twiddling our thumbs. no filed work, no reporst to write. A bit of a piss off really given that I have pretty much worked in isolation with very little people contact for over 25 years.

Oh well, its just money, & other things are far more important. I tell Kellie to just sleep in & enjoy the break from working. Just make my coffee! ;-)

Regardless, I guess given my old man is 84 & mother not far behind him, & having had a health scare myself not long ago narrowly missing getting my beans, I figure the lock down in Kiwiland is no big deal & worth the loss of income & inconvenience to save innocent lives of those most at risk. And its not too much of a change for us compared to others for now...

I make a bit of whole grain craft beer... so managed to order enough to make 23 litres of APA & another 23l of XPA... even bought some paint like Thomas... (last resort) ... still, I wish I wasn't on top of my reloading for my rifles. Just heard the NZDA have closed our range. Hunting a no go too. Fek!

Gotta laugh, what else can ya do?

Cheers all, take care & stay patient,

Jon

Working at home here with my wife. She in the house, me in the garage. Have 2 computers. I kind of like it, still a novelty. Been in the same building for 25 years at work.

I feel so very Blessed to be still working, almost guilty. Its pretty desperate here in Alberta like a lot of places.

I am a bit spooked about my range. Last time I was there a guy went off about how much bull all this was. It was kinda scary coming out of an armed guy. A certain group of the boys here don't seem to get the whole social distancing thing and don't seem to give a crap. I am delivering food to my parents, I need to stay away from those kind of people. I may have to wait and find somewhere afield when the snow finally leaves...

Hey Warwick!
The quads are serviced. Susan and I drove out to scout an area for grouse. One minute prior to spotting the bull moose she said!! I'm stating this NOW. We will sight a bull moose. She stated. I Don't want to state this after we sight this animal. Yep! First cross road there stands a bull. We turn up the cross road and watch him crash through the Bush head down. Hahaha.
Season starts Sept 15 but we did not receive a draw for a tag. We put up metal chicken targets at 150 feet and checked our 7, 6, and 4 shots for the 410 and 20 gauge.
We were in Argentina Feb 05 to Mar 19. I returned with breaking bone virus. 6 months of strength training and streaching required for full recovery. Tested for Covid. Negative. Although we both lost sense of taste and smell for two weeks. We isolate from others as it us possble we are carriers. I lost 10 pounds of weight. Never thought it would be possible. I've regained 4.

I remain! Mean as a snake and twice as fast.
