Sexual Intellectuals

Where do these people come from? And why do they think that I, or anyone else for that matter, care what they have to say? Do they think that the garbage that spews forth from their pie-hole will advance mankind into the next stage of evolution? (Speaking of evolution, on the evolutionary scale, I usually put them about two steps above a toaster.) The only benefit that I have ever received from these individuals is the immense feeling of relief when they leave.

A case in point:

I am at our local gun club range, a good day, one or two stragglers come through, but for all intents and purposes, I am by myself. My pace is very un-rushed, the temperature is perfect. The barrel cools by the time I finish my notes on the previous shot. All in all, a really nice day.

The rifle of choice today: Baikal MP-221, cal. 45-70 Government. Open iron sights. Barrel length: 23 3/4". Range: 100 metres.

Target choice today is a piece of cardboard that is 30" wide and 78" high (for two reasons: I have old eyes, and this is the first rifle I've owned and shot with iron sights). I have no expectations of anything good coming from the days shooting, but I am here and who knows?

I am well into the day, there are something in the neighbourhood of twenty holes in the target, scattered all over and around the bull, but every shot has been recorded and the groups (or lack) have been noted in my book. It looks like a shotgun was taken to it, but I know and am familiar with every one of them.

When this individual arrives, he drives up in his pick-up, parks right behind me, and because he thinks that the mighty sound of his Cummins V-8 Penile Prowess Meter will somehow impress me, revs the shit out of it. Not knowing for sure, but having some insight into the nature of how macho this character thinks he is, I make the basic assumption, and wait. I pull off target (no point in wasting a target), and wait until I hear the door open, count to three and fire. Yep, my guess was right. No ear muffs. Ooops, sorry.

I break the action, pretend I am doing something other than paying any attention to the Lord of the Limp, just hoping he goes away. This is not to be. He sees this as an opening. Whatcha shooten? Hmmm. Howz it shoot? I tell him I don't know, I'll have to look. So I get up, walk over and look through the spotting scope and say something like Pretty good, so far. He assumes that this means he can actually come over and look through my scope, but of course because he is so knowledgeable in the ways of heaven and earth, instead of just looking through it, he has to grab hold of the ocular end so it doesn't try to run away. Apparently, he is not so clever, because at 45X, as we all know, the slightest movement of the scope throws it out of alignment with the target. His comment? What wer ya shootin at? I really had to try not to laugh out loud. I just said the big target on the left. Idiot.

After looking through the scope at a dirt bank, he figures I know way less than he does, he asks me if I've ever had it "slam fire". Say what???? I know, my bad, but I can't help myself. I say what's that mean? You know, when both barrels go off at the same time, he says. Ummm, no, I says, I only put one finger at a time in the hole. He doesn't get it, so I leave it. They (the rifle, I assume) do it all the time he says, they are really bad for it. They are really cheap Turkish guns, he says. Oh. Now he looks at my notes, which are in plain view, so public knowledge and access according to law. I should have closed the book. He starts in on how the loads I'm using are way too high pressure, gonna blow up my gun, blah blah blah. How he's using the same loads in his 458 MemberMagnum and getting 2600. 2600 what I ask him? Feet, he says. That's a long shot I say, that's like a mile I say. Yeah, the magnums are good for that. ??????????? I really should stop at this time, but I can't. And I know my therapist will give me a lecture about my behaviour, but I can't help myself. With that load he says you'll be getting about 1600 feet out of that 18" barrel. Oh, no wonder I can't get it to group, I says. Yeah, he says, those Balkans (???) are really bad for that. You'll be lucky to get 6" out of it. That's ok, I say, I think I can hit a target at that range. He doesn't get it, so I leave it. Good luck he says, and the sun comes out and shines a ray of knowledge on me as he turns to leave, and I look skyward and say thank you. But apparently, he's not done spouting (sorry, sharing) his wealth of wisdom upon us poor underlings. He spies the 10-22 in the rack and turns back. I did not know, or was not aware, that apparently when a squirrel sees a different pinecone, he thinks it's the same one he just had and starts in on it. This explains the behaviour of this mental midget, as the whole episode starts over again, almost word for word, the only difference being the substitution of calibres, speed, etc. Finally, with a roar of raw penile prominence, he's off down the road to enlighten his followers in the church of Those Who Listen Will Learn.

I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted from my shoulders with the knowledge that has been granted to me from a saviour of the people.

Re: Sexual Intellectuals
Nice rant Paul- awesome.

Slightly off topic, sounds like a fun rifle to be playing with Paul. Hope you manage to get it grouping. When / if you have time, please share (rifles section) how it shoots, what the trigger is up to and how handles the stouter loads. Am sure others will enjoy this.

Re: Sexual Intellectuals
I'm hearing you Paul, I'm off to the range today to re-sight our CZ452, it's only a .22 but my dad took it down the range a month ago and someone had the courtesy to fiddle with the scope. My dad is a polite enough guy and let him "improve" the sights for him. My dad mentioned he took it on a shooting trip and hit everything he pointed it at and now not so good.

Nonetheless, it'll be a fun day at the range and my daughter's first time down there so some positives there :) hopefully noone wants to offer advice.

That should read, my dad took it on a shooting trip before the guy fiddled with it...

Re: Sexual Intellectuals
It is a fun rifle. It is going to be a challenge, for sure. I've already had to modify some things, nothing serious, mainly the trigger guard. It had a knife edge from being stamped metal. Cut the hell out of my finger every time I pulled the front trigger. Made one out of aluminum, left it open at the rear, no more need to bring the first aid kit.

The right barrel is bang on (sorry, bad pun). It groups at 1-1/2" to 2" at 100m, which I think is pretty awesome for being half blind and three days older than dirt.

The left barrel, not so much. It hits somewhere else, and I have to play with the regulation. At short range around 20 -30 metres, both barrels are with in inches of each other, and this is why I bought it. But I am undecided whether to actually try to regulate it or leave it.

I've polished the trigger mechanisms, so they are better. Not really sure what they are better than, but at least it's a smooth pull. I will have to fabricate a new lever for each trigger to shorten the pull. I haven't looked into whether I can adjust the weight or not. It's not bad, probably 3 -4 pounds. I can live with that.

I have to keep reminding myself, this is not a long range rifle. I will be limited to no more than 125 metres.

If anyone that is following this has software, my chrono is on the fritz, so I can't do a velocity check. If you plug in my numbers, will it give a general idea of velocity? My current load so far is: once fired Starline brass, CCI 200 LR primer, 52.5gr H4198, 350gr Hornady FP, SD .238, BC .195, Lee Factory Crimp in cannelure.

This is nowhere near max pressure (hottest acceptable load was 54gr H4198, all other numbers the same), but it was the most accurate.

If these numbers work in your software, thanks. It would be nice to have some idea of what I'm dealing with.

Re: Sexual Intellectuals
Yeah, I saw your other post. I wouldn't get to down on yourself, you really don't know what the fellow did to the scope. And it's going to be a guessing game until you figure it out. Not being familiar with the CZ, I looked it up on Wiki. Nice rig you have there. Can't imagine trying to shoot it prone though. When I mounted the scope on the 10-22, I couldn't bore sight it, so I had to start at 10 m and work my way out to 55 m. Even at 10m it was a tough go as the first one missed completely, and how do you know what to do and where to go? With your bolt out at least you should be able to see the paper at 10 or 25m. So, is prone the only way you are allowed to shoot at your range? Are there no shooting benches?

Re: Sexual Intellectuals
Thanks Paul, It's been a great littel rifle, I've had it since I was 14, so that's 16 years now...
I'm not too sure of the range regulations, honestly, this was my first visit as a shooter. There was a bench there but I think the guy using it must have brought it as it was only him using it. It's an outdoor range with mounds for shooting every 100yds, all the way to 900yds. So I imagine hvaing benches isnot something they could offer...

Re: Sexual Intellectuals
Sighting in my rifle today to help get it on the paper.

3 shots in a 20mm(4/5") group at 25m that shot 100m right and about 150mm low.

The range officer told me that I only needed 4 clicks left to get on the centreline.

I explained that the scope moves in 1/4 MOA clicks so it'd be closer to 64. He then proceeded to tell me that because 4 times closer I'll only need a quarter of the clicks I would if I'd shot the same at 100. I humoured him and turned it 4 clicks. Same impact basically.

I then just wound the vertical dial right up and continued to sight it at 100.

I shot a 4 shot group that's 15mm (0.6MOA) across at 100, not on target, but still a nice group. Another group was about 10mm (0.4MOA) with 3 shots but it was on the cardboard (next to the target) so I can't prove it.

When I left it was 50mm to the right at 100 yards still so when I got home I dialed it 8 clicks to the left So I'll check it next time. It's shooting about 40mm low which is ok for me at 100yds on a 22.
