My season, last fall & this spring:

Had an exceptional hunting season last fall, and enhanced it this past spring. All with a Remington 700 CDL, 24" barreled .30-06 rifle, topped by a 25+ year old 2-7x Redfield scope. I used two handloads:

165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip & H4350, for 2900+ fps
200 gr Nosler Partition & H4350 for 2600 fps

Sometimes a good general-purpose rifle works out very well:

Elk at 338 yards, 165 gr Nosler - Oh my goodness, her wonderful elk meat is excellent!

Black bear at about 325 yards, 165 gr Nosler - the breakfast sausage is very good!

Pronghorn antelope in Wyoming, about 245 yards. The pronghorn yields delicious meat, and is a favorite meal here:

Mule deer, a 4x5, taken in Wyoming at about 140 yards. Good meat, not as wonderful as pronghorn, but good:

The 165 grain Nosler Ballistic tip worked very well. Accurate, and lethal. Each big game animal dropped with one shot. The mule deer required a finishing shot to kill it, but dropped at the first shot and never moved again. The elk staggered for about 20 yards, and I didn't get a chance for a second hit. The Ballistic Tip punched through her shoulder blade, and destroyed both lungs. Very effective.

I do most of my hunting with a .25-06 and a .30-06, though I do have several other rifles.

Regards, Guy

Re: My season, last fall & this spring:
In May, I drove my Jeep from Washington State to Fairbanks, Alaska, about 2200 miles. Took a bush plane into the Arctic, where I camped for nine days in a small tent. Four of us were in camp, two guides, two hunters. I've been to Alaska many times, but this was an amazing experience!

I used my .30-06 Remington 700 CDL, with the old 2-7x Redfield scope, zeroed at 200 yards with 200 grain Nosler Partitions loaded to 2600 fps via H4350. A very accurate load.

First kill was a white wolf at about 250 yards. Yes, the Nosler Partition expands readily, even on game as small as a wolf:

Then a few days later, after a difficult stalk, I got my chance at a big arctic grizzly, at a mere 40 yards:

The 200 grain Nosler worked well, my first hit punched through his leg, breaking that, and going into the heart/lung area, dropping him. However he wasn't ready to quit and regained his feet. My guide and I both fired, and he dropped again, before he could reach the thick cover of the willows. I finished him with a shot to the chest from my guide's .338 Win mag. He had 225 grain Barnes TSX ammunition.

It was an amazing hunt, and I'd absolutely love to journey back to the Arctic to experience it all over again. Or even just to hike, camp, and fish.
