Indicator of Heart Shot

When you shoot an animal in the side, and their facing front leg goes stiff, is that an indicator of a heart shot? I know the pithy answer is to say that it means the shoulder is broken. However, I have heard experienced hunters say that a stiff on-side leg is an indicator of a heart shot.

Thanks.

Hi Lane, normally you will see the animal lift a front leg and run on the other three. It is a consistent reaction and something I have to watch for when guiding. With a low power pill, the dead run can be 50 yards to a couple of hundred yards depending on the game species.

Yours current rifle / load will produce extensive damage and will shorten such a dead run. But if possible, it pays to attempt to strike the center shoulder or if you must, just behind to maximize meat retrieval. A true heart shot is very low. As you reach out longer, you will get a few heart shots with environmental errors. But again, your current rig will take care of that and secure a clean and humane kill.

Thanks Nathan. Should've known you'd be the one to know this for dead certain. Thanks so much again for the help with the rifle. Been awaiting a break in the wind to go shoot those ELD-M's but may not happen until the week.
