Gap between ring base and rifle causing rust?

Hi All,

I'm using optilock rings on an old sako A3, and have noticed a bit of surface rust where the base meets the rifle (have cleaned that up), but noticed there is a slight gap between the base and the rifle itself. Photo below doesn't show it properly, but I would guess its about 0.5mm. Is this normal for these rings? Any ideas why this rust would be forming here?

Thanks

I've used Leupold rings made for the factory Sako dovetails, and they do show a gap between ring and receiver. The gap is not causing rust, but allowing moisture (water) to remain there held by capillary attraction is. The water gets in there if you've had the rifle out in the rain, snow, etc. Or, if you bring it into a warm building when it's cold from the outdoors the metal can "sweat" just like an iced drinking glass in a warm room. You need to inspect the rifle and give it a shot of WD-40 (the WD comes from it's intended use as a water displacer). If the rifle were mine, I'd take the rings off and thoroughly remove the rust from rings and receiver. Touch up with cold bluing if needed, then wipe with an oily cloth and replace. Happy New Year, Ed

Hi Sam.

What Ed said, plus a load of grease in between the rings and action to prevent moist from entering.

Also I would consider filing down the bottom of "claws" of the rings about 0,5-1 mm, so the actual bottom surface of the rings has full contact with the flat top of the action, and the claws will have a slight gap underneath, so that they are pulling properly downwards. That gap just doesn't seem right to me. Now the scope is just resting on those edges (and friction).

But maybe there is some strange Sako/ Optilock thing I am not aware of.

Cheers

Magnus

Just any kind of grease that does not contain water will do. Normal axel grease, waterfree vaseline, lanolin grease, the white stuff in fishing reels etc. Just something that stays there, in stead of water getting in. I use the same as for the tractor, but in a pinch I just use the same vaseline I use for lips and hands.
