Brendon Greig

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the S Tac 4X20X50 scopes have also looked at some nightforce I am still a we while away from up grading but am looking at options I am wanting a scope I can use for general hunting (bush hunting) and something that can reach out, which this scope appears it could do but it appears it is only available in duplex and MOA reticals which the cross hair maybe to thick in for longer shooting from what I can work out on there site the dot in MOA is 1.25 inch when on 4 power and 0.25 on 20 power which is quite thick the Duplex appaires to be 0.5 inch on 4 power and 0.1 on 20 power which maybe ok Also wondering if it is covering to much magnification to work properly as Nathan says about some things nether one or the other
I also have someone coming out from the states in a few months so was wondering if it was worth getting them to bring one home with them but will still have to find out if that is possible due to importing regulations ect and cost
Thanks in advance for any help cheers Brendon

Brendon, I can't be much help on the subject of the scope, but I can maybe save you some grief on getting out of the States and into Aus/NZ.

Do some reading on " International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)". It is an international pact designed to stem the flow of illegal arms. Unfortunately, it also greatly affects us normals. It not only restricts what comes into different countries, but also what leaves, eg., your scope.

Be very careful about taking it out of the States. If you don't have the proper paperwork, not only will your goods be confiscated, but the individual who is transporting them will be detained and held for possible prosecution. You may also be deemed as a co-conspirator and legal action may be initiated.

Then you get to the part where you are bringing the goods into your country. Do you need an Import Certificate? If you don't have one and need one, kiss your scope goodbye.

Don't get me wrong here. I am not trying to dissuade you from getting Directorate of Defense Trade Control’s licensing and compliance officesyour scope. I'm just letting you know that it won't be easy.

There are ways to do it, and it can be done, but it takes a lot of time. I waited for about four months just to get empty unprimed brass across the border into Canada. And that was with all the paperwork in order.

The people at the Directorate of Defense Trade Control’s licensing and compliance offices are very helpful and willing to answer all your questions.
Their email address is: [email protected]

They are not government agents, they are contractors for the government, but they helped me immensely with my process.

If you can find a licensed importer/exporter you are way further ahead if you use them. You would have to determine if their fees were justified versus your time and effort to do it yourself. In my case, I did it just to see how hard it was going to be. It wasn't, it just took a long, long time.

I hope this helps.

Brendon, when I pasted the name of the department into the post, it duplicated it in the wrong place. When you read through it and you get to the part that starts "Don't get me wrong......" this is where it ended up somehow. Just ignore that , it's in the right place further down. Sorry.

Hi Brendon, I have the S-TAC 4-20, extremely brioght and clear, very long eye relief, very robust.

I'll try to get some photos of this in the bush when I can. Have not done so yet.

If you have any doubt due to aging eyes, opt for a Sightron mil dot reticle as this works extremely well, even at 6x in the bush. They also have an illuminated MOA reticle.

Rough photo of illuminated reticle at 6x. First tree is just a few paces from me. Cross hair is centered on bush about 30 yards away.

Hi Nathan is the reticle in the photo from a S111 scope as I cant find any illuminated reticles on the sightron sight for the STac

The only one on the star is an illuminated ceter dot on my 2.5-17x56 scope
I would guess the one in Nathan's photo is the SIII reticle but am not 100% sure on that as I have none of the older stacs than that..

Re: Sightron S Tac 4X20X50
Well after some contemplating and looking around for a while I went and saw the NZ Sightron importer and he had a STAC 4-20X50 with MOA reticle they only had one there and said it had been on back order for awhile before it arived so I now own my first sightron scope. So now I will have to get myself a Remington 700 in 7mm rem mag to put it on as I think it may be a slight overkill on my 17 hmr

For the money they are very good scopes. I would be interested in your comments once you have tried it out for a bit.

I have the same one and like it. Tracks as well as the rest of the Sightron scopes I have used, and as Nathan stated, they are built well to hold up as a decent hunting scope.

Brendon you have to remember that at 20 X magnification a target 500 yards away will appear 20 X closer so that's 25 yards. I hope my maths is correct. The mildot shouldn't cover too much of the target! A great lifetime purchase you've made. Enjoy it
