Best Long Range Round and Barrel Length for 300 WSM?

What is the best performing round and barrel length for a 300WSM for shooting 600- 1200 yards?

I have had pretty good luck at the range with .300 WSM HSM Trophy Gold 185 Grain Berger Hunting VLD Bullet at 2991 fps. But, my barrel length is 20" and I know I am losing some FPS down range.

Would love to hear some successful combos from long range hunters.[b]

Lots of good info in there to help out and give you the big picture as they say! Amax's are to go to bullet for many LR applications and would suit your purpose as Thomas as said.

Your dilemma will become evident as you read through Nathans book!
Your 30 cal will love the extended ranges with the 208 Amax but your barrel length will limit the cartridges Magnum gains.

I cannot quote figures like some but the magnums need barrel length to get the upper hand with the bigger charges. Either use the big pill with reduced range or possibly the 178 Amax with a suitable powder but your wanted range of 1200yards will be short, l would suggest. Paper or rock plinking, yeah different story, but as you have said "hunters" l would be looking inside 1000 yards max depending on game type.

You will see what l mean as you read through the book and then you will be able to make your own, well Informed, self-imposed & realistic limits!

Let us know how you get on, cheers Marty

Thank you for the reply, Marty. What I gather from the book it seems most of the data was compiled on a 24" barrel. The rifle is currently back at the Christensen Arms factory getting some warranty work done and while it is there I was going to have them swap the barrel to either a 24" or 26" barrel. It appears the 300 Win Mags are coming standard with a 26" barrel so I am still a little apprehensive as far as which one to get?

Hi Justin, the .300 WSM is quite efficient. The purpose of the design was to create slightly more compact rifles. So in this sense, the combination of both a slightly shorter action and 24" barrel help keep the rigs a bit more compact than a long magnum.

If you chose to go with a 26" barrel, three things will happen. The first is that you will gain around 70fps. Its not a big deal but is there if you want it. The second is that it will add a touch more weight and will keep the weight forwards. This could be of great benefit seeing as you are shooting a potentially high recoiling ultra light rig. The third is that it will change the nature of the rifle ever so slightly in that you are starting to get away from the compact rifle premise.

I cannot say which is the right way to go. But, I will say that you may need to look at some form of recoil control on a light rig like this. I would rather fit a suppressor than a brake. There should be plenty of meat at the muzzle for this. But if you fit a suppressor, the rig will be very long. So in this sense, I would not go longer than 24". The other option which I would be equally happy with, is to re-barrel to 26" and work on technique. I think one of these two options would be the go for this particular rifle.

Yes agree with all 26" is correct tube length

You will get the most velocity from the slow burning powder
