re-barrel options

hi Nathan, are you over the rain yet?
hey I was thinking if my rifle isn't shooting so flash and I was going to re-barrel what should I think about to benefit me.
in my case shooting my 8 twist .223 and the 80gr amax, I like the weight and length, contour that I have. but shooting that amax am I correct to think if the throat was made longer I could seat out further to fit more powder in the case? (I realise I only want to go as far as seating for concentricity, so it wont be a lot further)
how will that effect my 50gr load, would it just mean a bigger jump, no big deal?
is there any down sides to having a longer throat, or any other options I should think about when re-barrelling?

Re: re-barrel options
Hi Jason, one of the problems with trying to extend a throat just a touch, is that by the time the smith brings the throat reamer up to touch, he may lose up to 2 or 2.5mm (80-120 thou) with the slightest feed. So it can be a bit tricky. Increased jump will effect the 55gr loads insofar as it is relative to cartridge concentrity (of which you already have a handle on).

One thing to consider Jason, is that if you are willing to part with the current barrel, there is nothing to stop you from performing some of the experiments in my current book. You have nothing to lose.

It may pay to give me a call at some stage. Its been a while since we had a chat anyway.

Re: re-barrel options
yeah ok, I get ya.
i looked into new barrel prices, i thought they might be a bit cheaper than they are. theres a few things to look into before i swap barrels. i guess i was looking into an easy option if it was cheap enough. i was a bit lost at the range today, it shot nearly as it used to for two rounds, then opened up, then came tighter again later on. i wouldn't rule out me as i havnt done a lot of shooting lately, at least on paper where actual accuracy shows up more.
in saying that i was shooting a lot when things first showed up.
i was also thinking of changing stocks before i gave up on this barrel. just the flex in the standard one as i do use a bipod, and free float and bed it to see if that changes anything.
i will give you a call sometime.
