Standard primers in 300 win mag loads?

I’ve read and seen in some manuals standard primers being substituted for magnum primers with stick powder and seeing a slight increase in accuracy. I’m personally about to use 4831 with 212 ELDX … asked on Reddit and someone recommended i ask here as well.

I note on the knowledgebase here it mentions standard primers on the 300 Win Mag page.

Not going to take someone’s advice as gospel, but certainly weighing it against conventional (manual) wisdom.

Anyone have first or second hand experience with this?

Hi Guy, by altering the intensity of the primer, one can slightly manipulate the burn rate of the the powder. The combination of a standard primer with 4831 burn rate works particularly well, the combination being highly useful with heavy projectiles.

Much also depends on the barrel length. If for example I am dealing with a long barreled magnum rifle (whether 7mm rem Mag or .300 Win Mag etc), there is no great need for a a quick burn so I will generally try to use a standard primer. A standard primer also allows one to use a little bit more powder (generally 1 grain) which can help pack the case more and therefore help to improve ES (if the case is underfilled to begin with).

As a contrast, one can use a magnum primer to help ensure a full burn from a shorter barrel (e.g. using H1000 in a 24" barrel) and to prevent unburned powder kernals from entering a suppressor.

There are situations in which a magnum primer should always be used. The Weatherby magnums for example utilize a very large powder charge. More to the point, the magnum power primer (starting with the Federal 215) was developed specifically for the largest Weatherby case, using over 100 grains powder.

So as an answer to your question, yes I have done this as have many of my readers and forum members. If you wish to dive deeper into any of this, you may find my book series of interest.

Re: Standard primers in 300 win mag loads?
I have never had reason/need to use a Mag primer in my 26" win mag.

Nathan advised me to run 210MG and never looked back. (I do load mags in 300wsm)
Loaded 168-215 grain projectiles shooting in 5-40 deg C. Very repeatable, reliable and accurate for getting on 8 years or so.
