280 Ackley Improved

I have a CVA single shot re-chambered into a standard (not Nosler) 280 Ackely Improved. I have shot this at targets and it seems to have impressive results. Some say that it has potential as a long range 7mm. I was wondering if anyone has anything to comment regarding this cartridge.

To me, it seems to rival my Weatherby 7mm Magnum in terms of being potentially close, without having to depend upon a Magnum. However it doesn't have the velocity that the magnum does, but reloading might be less expensive - although the only apparent savings is the brass. Weatherby vs Remington.

It seems to like a 180 grain Berger VLD and using 280 fire formed brass and 55.0 grains of IMR 7828. Other sources say that this particular round is very versatile from Antelope to Elk.

Any thoughts?

Re: 280 Ackley Improved
From the KB:

The combination of high BC’s combined with mild recoil, have made the .280 and .280 Ackley Improved wildcat, highly favored cartridges for long range hunters wanting to build light and set limits on recoil accordingly, recoil to both the shooter and rifle platform. The .280 is also suitable for high power long range competition however recoil and throat wear are considered extreme in comparison to currently favored cartridges.

The 180 grain VLD bullet can be driven at around 2700-2750fps in standard configuration 24” barreled .280 rifles. From custom 26-27” long range hunting rifle barrels, the 180 grain VLD can be pushed to 2850fps (full 32” target barrels can comfortably achieve 2950fps). Unfortunately, the 2011 orange box VLD needs to hit bone to prevent pin hole wounding at long ranges. Hopefully, Berger will produce a more frangible 180 grain VLD duplicating the original bullet in the future. If this can be achieved, regardless of whether the 180 grain bullet is driven at 2700fps or 2850fps, the VLD will once again be an exceptional performer down to 1400fps across an immensely wide range of body weights.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved
Thanks for the update on the Berger 180 VLD. I will shop around for another such as Nosler, Sierra, or Hornady.
